Why is my senior dog struggling to walk, drinking more, and withdrawn?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 11 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

My dog (11 year old dachshund, male, sterilized) has been having lots and more difficulty managing daily walks. He is drinking more water than usual, being less social than he used to be, and has suddenly saggy neck skin (pronounced dewlap) that was never there before. The difficulty with walks has been a gradual progression over the last 12-18 months. He also struggles with getting onto the bed/sofa.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain though it could also be due to arthritis. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sausage evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sausage feel better. In the meantime, reduce his activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good day!

It is hard to say for certain what is going on without seeing Corazon in person for an exam. From what you described, it sounds like he may have some back or neck pain. I recommend he sees his veterinarian for an exam very soon to help pinpoint where the pain in coming from. Your vet may recommend x-rays or other imaging to help get a better idea of what the cause is so he can get the treatment he needs to start feeling better.

Why is my senior dog unsteady, not drinking, and not pooping?

This presentation could commonly be caused either by a neurological damage of the nerves of the back legs (usually from spinal cord), caused by a stroke or a intervertebral disc extrusion/protrusion,or potentially by severe arthritis and osteo-arthrosis. A check up and appropriate medications (anti-inflammatories) would be ideal and essential to understand the underlying cause. Why is my senior dog not eating, drinking, and struggling to walk?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Kakes! Kakes is an older dog and it worries me when older dogs stop eating and drinking. Possible causes are: kidney or liver failure, cancer, bleeding in belly, back or neck pain (Dachshund's are predisposed), viral or bacterial infections, a fever, lyme disease, pancreatitis I think it is best to have her seen as soon as you can, today preferably, by a Veterinarian. After their exam they will recommend appropriate testing to figure out WHY she has stopped eating and is having trouble walking. I hope this helps and I wish you and Kakes the best!

Why is my senior dog walking with a low head and restricted movement?

Hello. I think you are quite correct that this is probably spine &/or nerve related. Intervertebral disc disease ( IVDD ), or osteoarthritis are common aging problems in dogs. At its worse, a dog may need surgery. In most cases, treating with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications can keep a pet very comfortable. My senior dog won't eat, drink, is wobbly, and has weak back legs.

This could be due to a bulging or ruptured intervertebral disc, causing pressure on the spinal cord resulting in ataxia and progressing to paralysis I recommend immediate treatment Your veterinarian will do a neurological assessment and perhaps an X-ray or blood tests to determine the diagnosis and will start treatment right away so hopefully Bubbas will regain the use of his legs.
