My dachshund is hurting and walking funny. Is it a serious back issue?

Sadie may be having a bulging or ruptured disc issue in her back. She needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately because the sooner this issue is addressed the better chance she has for a full recovery. Disc disease is very painful and can result in paralysis if not treated. Depending on the severity of the disease Sadie may just need prescription medication and rest or if the condition is more severe she may need surgery for a full recovery. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have these prescribed by a veterinarian. Again, the sooner Sadie is treated the better chance for a full recovery so please take her to see a veterinarian right away. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. It doesn't take much for them to hurt their back. Just jumping outside on the fence, chasing a squirrel and turning wrong, jumping on the bed or couch, just doing their normal day to day things. It is really hard to say. I'm not even sure that she has a back problem. I can't tell for sure without laying my hands on her and examining her myself. It is just my best guess. That is why a vet exam is so important. If you are truly worried this much you should take her in to an emergency clinic now. It is better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes. Since Lola is in obviously in pain I suggest you take her to a veterinarian right away for an exam. Suspecting back problems the vet will want to take x-rays in order to inspect the discs in Lola's spine. A prolapsed disc would be very painful and she would need pain medicine and rest in order to improve.

Congratulations on your new puppy! While dachshunds are prone to back issues, particularly intervertebral disc disease (when the jelly like substance between the bones of the spine comes out and presses on the spinal cord), these issues typically arise in middle aged to older dogs. I recommend keeping a close eye on Candy Cane and having her evaluated by a vet if you notice that she is limping or not using one of her legs.

It does sound like a back injury. If he is getting worse (meaning he started out stumbling and then was dragging his limbs then stopped urinating), the best solution for him is surgery. Make sure you talk to the vet about medications and the biggest importance is REST! This means in a cage only- no walking, carry outside to potty and carry back in. It sounds like she could have a problem with her back. Intervertebral disc disease is very common in the dachshund breed and she may have a disc that is starting to herniate. She needs to be examined by a vet to evaluate her back and determine the best treatment plan. Your vet may need to take an x-ray of her back. Anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxers, and pain medications are used to treat this condition, as well as strict rest. No jumping, running, or playing for 3-6 weeks.
