My dog is twitching, weak, falling, and gagging. Is it an emergency?

I'm sorry to hear Joe is having an issue! Certainly must have been scary for you and him! It's impossible to say what caused this in Joe, but I'm concerned that this could have been a seizure. I'd strongly recommend taking Joe to see a veterinarian right away as seizures can be caused by a number of things including toxin exposure. It could have also been due to a respiratory or heart issue. Either cause is serious and requires emergency veterinary attention. It is very hard to say what is the problem, as the symptoms she is showing are specific to one particular disease. I could be due to intoxication, kidney or liver disease, heart failure and many more. Extreme weakness, low body temperature and problem with the balance all suggest potentially a life-threatening problem, so please call your nearest vets right away

The description of heavy breathing, retching, and contracting abdomen sound like the symptoms of a gastric dilatation/volvulus, or bloat. This happens when the stomach is filled with air and can even twist on itself and is more common in large breed dogs. The condition is extremely uncomfortable, and requires immediate stabilization and possibly surgery. This can be life-threatening and requires immediate veterinary care, especially if there is torsion. I recommend getting your dog to the vet as soon as possible. There are 24-hour emergency clinics in most cities that are open overnight and will be able to stabilize your dog.

I agree it does sound like he could have gotten in to a toxin. Be sure that he didn't have access to anti-freeze. If there is ANY chance he could have it is deadly and immediate intervention is needed. The best thing for both dogs is to be seen at an Emergency hospital. Yes, any pet that has persistent signs especially vomiting and diarrhea should be evaluated immediately. Once dehydration and electrolyte imbalance develop, they will just continue to get weaker and weaker unless treated. Reasons for vomiting/diarrhea are many and range from intestinal problems or problems with other organs in the body causing the signs. Intestinal worms, dietary indiscretion (eating things she is not supposed to eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, a foreign body (especially in younger dogs), infection, inflammation, toxins, pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, etc. Your vet can do a physical exam and some tests which could include a fecal exam, blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to try to determine what is causing the problem. Once a diagnosis is made they will advise a treatment plan to address the issue. Your vet can also address the itching of her muzzle and whining which may or may not be related. I hope this is just temporary and it resolves quickly for you and Moka.

Hi. This sounds like it could be serious. I would worry about either some seizure activity, some severe nausea, dizziness, or even ears. Lots of possibilities. But this needs to be addressed quickly. I would call your veterinarian for an appointment today. If they aren't available then I would recommend the ER

She could be acting like that from perhaps severe dehydration and hypovolemia (lack of volume in her circulatory system) from so much diarrhea and recent history of anorexia and not drinking water. She could have also being exposed to some toxin that is affecting both her gastrointestinal and neurologic systems. I highly recommend you take her to a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible. Good luck!
