My dog has diarrhea. Can I give him Pepto Bismol and how much?

The standard liquid Pepto Bismol formula (17.5 mg of bismuth subsalicylate per milliliter) is administered at a rate of 0.5 ml per pound or 1 U.S. teaspoon for every 10 pounds of a dog’s body weight. Therefore your dog would get 8.5 mls of the standard liquid medicine.

The dosage for Pepto in dogs is one teaspoon per ten pounds, so 1.5 teaspoons would work. I recommend getting a crate and putting him in it when no one is home to prevent him from getting into the trash when left supervised. Alternatively, you can shut him in a bathroom or other small room, just be sure there isn't anything in there he can reach and eat.

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If your puppies are having mild diarrhea that has not lasted over 6 hours, eating fine and acting normally with no vomiting, then it can be safe. However, it is just a band aid and does not fix the underlying problem as to WHY they are having diarrhea. If the diarrhea has persisted longer than a few hours, the puppies are not eating, they are vomiting or lethargic, I would not give Pepto Bismol. I would not recommend Pepto bishop for diarrhea, as the ingredients are often not well tolerated in dogs. You can feed some canned pumpkin or boiled chicken and rice to see if that helps but if it's not improving she may need to see your vet for treatment.

If the diarrhea doesn’t improve within a few days or if any other symptoms emerge then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. I do not recommend giving Benji Pepto Bismol, as it can lead to toxicity. Take a fecal sample from him in with you in case the vet wants to run tests on it.

Tums is not likely to help with the diarrhea. His problem is not the stomach, it is the colon (large intestines). If the diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours (despite the Pepto) then you need to get him to a vet for an exam. Also, if is not eating or feeling otherwise unwell he should see a vet.
