Should I use treats for dog training if he's still potty training?

he is very young to be fully trained yet, so do not get discouraged, most do not get it until closer to 4 months. If he is going to the bathroom in his kennel, then his kennel is too big. You need to make it smaller so he will not have that much room.. he needs enough space to stand up and turn 1 circle and lay down again. When you take him out, when goes, reward him with treats and praise. If he does not go, back in to the kennel--wait 5 minutes--outside to try again. Make sure you carry him outside as sometimes they get too excited they just can't make it all the way there on their own yet. As far as treats goes, you can try boiled chicken or yogurt or even cheerios and animal crackers to help encourage him since he is a picky eater. Praise can work well for some too if he prefers that over food.

The key is that the training reward is small enough to be eaten in one bite. If they spend more than 1 or 2 seconds chewing and swallowing the treat, it's too big. You want your dog's focus to be on you during training time, so keep the treat small enough that his attention is not taken from you for more than a second a so. When giving treats for non-training times, they can be larger, but since they generally eat a bunch of treats during training, keeping them tiny can prevent an upset stomach.
