My dog had puppies. How long is too long between pups? Are there more?

Hello. As long as she is not actively pushing / straining & seems content to care for her new family, she may just need to rest for several hours. It is also not unusual for there to be a 24 hour gap between starting labor & delivering the last puppy. I will tell you that sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between an involuting uterus ( one that is shrinking down ) & the perception that there may be still some puppies. The uterus can be quite "lumpy" at this early stage. If she remains comfortable & there is no excessive drainage ( there will be the normal greenish discharge called lochia ), then I would not be too concerned. But if you are still concerned in 3-4 hours, or she starts pushing with no deliveries after 30 minutes, do see your veterinarian for further evaluation. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sis! No it isn't normal for puppies to be born 24 hours apart or to have so many still born or die after birth. It shouldn't be more than 2 hours between puppies. I would take Sis to the Vet for an exam to be sure she doesn't have an infection and an X-ray to confirm that there are no more puppies. Wow! That is unusual but hopefully everyone is doing well! As a veterinarian it is my duty to recommend the safest plan, which would be to have her evaluated by a veterinarian and an x-ray to make sure she does not have any more retained fetuses. Hopefully everyone is nursing well and mom is feeling good and eating well. I recommend weighing the pups daily to make sure they are gaining weight and thriving. Hello. You should really consider having Sweety evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure there are no more puppies inside. If there are, your veterinarian should ultrasound them to see if they are showing any signs of fetal distress. This will determine if an emergency C-section is necessary, We can see a bitch take up to 24 hours to deliver, but with such a small litter, & one non-viable pup, I would want to make sure all is well with Sweety. It is very likely that she will if you feel like she has more. If nothing happens after 4 hours from the birth of the last one a check up at your local veterinarian is needed as there may be a case of dystocia and medical or surgical intervention may be needed. Feed a high quality canned puppy food, she needs the energy and water 2. Watch for any face rubbing, twitching, seizures- these are signs of low calcium and this is a life-threatening condition, if any of this occurs get her to a vet right away. 3. Make sure the puppies are all suckling, and make sure Lila is licking them and cleaning them up. 4. Keep their enclosure clean and dry 5. Try to handle the puppies as little as possible and let Lila do her thing, instincts should take over 6. Call your vet about getting a dewormer for Lila. Also discuss her vaccine status 7. Keep any other dogs away, the puppies are at risk of getting viruses and infections. 8. You will need to have the puppies dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age, so make an appointment for then with your vet. 9. Weigh the puppies twice a day on a small gram scale. However, if Mia is having strong contractions for over 20-30min and she cannot produce a puppy, it is a reason to go to see a vet right away.
