My dog had puppies, then another one later. What should I do at home?

My dog just had puppies on saturday and then she had a puppy this morning and i want to know what i can do at home

Wow! That is unusual but hopefully everyone is doing well! As a veterinarian it is my duty to recommend the safest plan, which would be to have her evaluated by a veterinarian and an x-ray to make sure she does not have any more retained fetuses. Hopefully everyone is nursing well and mom is feeling good and eating well. I recommend weighing the pups daily to make sure they are gaining weight and thriving. If Mom is not eating or she seems to feel poorly then she should be evaluated as soon as possible. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Hello, congratulations on your new puppies. Sometimes puppies may be deceased at birth due to unknown reasons (abnormalities in development most often) and mom does not acknowledge that puppy. Because she is a first time mom, there is a chance she may have missed that puppy or could have been overwhelmed by what was going on.

As long as the everyone else is doing ok, nursing, moving, and defecating normally then they should be ok. Make sure mom is getting plenty of food and water as her demand is going to be much greater while nursing. You may switch her to puppy food or increased her feedings.

Hello. 8 puppies is a pretty good litter. If Mom seems content caring for her newborns, then I would not be too concerned. It is never a bad idea to have everyone checked in the next couple of days, but there is no hurry to do so as long as puppies are nursing & Louie is eating well. My dog had only two puppies. Could more be inside her?

If the mother is acting fine and you have not noticed a foul discharge from her vulva I would not be concerned that there are only two puppies. If she seems lethargic, has a foul vulvar discharge or seems to be straining, I would recommend that you have her seen by a veterinarian. They can perform an x-ray to determine if there are any puppies remaining. I would ensure that you are feeding the mother a high quality puppy food to ensure she has adequate nutrition for nursing the puppies. Please also consult with your veterinarian about a proper deworming protocol for the mother and puppies.

If you suspect there are more puppies that have not been born yet it is best to seek emergency care ASAP, especially if she has gone several hours without producing another puppy. Your vet may be able to examine or X-ray her to see if any more puppies are in the birth canal. Most small breed dogs typically only have 1-2 puppies in a litter normally, but there can be exceptions and if she seems in distress or you suspect a stuck puppy, seeking care ASAP is needed.

Hello. You should really consider having Sweety evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure there are no more puppies inside. If there are, your veterinarian should ultrasound them to see if they are showing any signs of fetal distress. This will determine if an emergency C-section is necessary, We can see a bitch take up to 24 hours to deliver, but with such a small litter, & one non-viable pup, I would want to make sure all is well with Sweety. My dog had a dead puppy. What immediate care does she need?

I recommend a vet visit to make sure that she doesn't have any retained placentas or another dead pup inside. Both these conditions can set her up for life-threatening infection. If she is eating and drinking normally, and does not have a high temperature, she is likely ok.
