How long is too long between puppies when a dog is giving birth?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 25 lbs

When a dog is giving birth, what is the normal time frame in which each puppy is supposed to be born between each other? Is it 45 mins between each puppy or..? Hopefully I made sense.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is about 30-45min. Some dogs can have longer break between the puppies, up to 1-1.5hr. However, if Mia is having strong contractions for over 20-30min and she cannot produce a puppy, it is a reason to go to see a vet right away.
