My dogs have ticks, can't walk, and are throwing up. What should I do?

Typically there is a local skin reaction "bulls-eye" reddened area that forms at the site of the bite and this can lead to overall illness, including fever, vomiting, diarrhea. Investigate the site where the tick bit and then I would recommend taking him to your local veterinarian for a full physical examination and proper medication to help stop the allergic reaction he may be having to the tick bite itself. I would also recommend placing a Seresto collar, Adaptil collar, or giving Nexgard tablets (flea and tick preventative) to prevent future tick bites.

Poor girl. Certainly tick borne disease can cause vomiting a couple weeks after exposure, but a month seems to be a bit prolonged. Also you would typically see other symptoms too such as limping, low grade fever and a decreased appetite. Other potential causes of vomiting are: stomach upset due to a change in diet, eating something she shouldn’t have, acid reflux disease, or even inflammatory bowel disease just to name a few. if he vomiting continues for more than a day or two, or if she has any more symptoms that you didn’t mention here, then this best to take her in for a complete examination to ensure she is ok. Ticks can cause illness, but it is also possible that something else is wrong and the tick has nothing to do with it. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. They may recommend an x-ray and / or blood work to help diagnose the problem. With intact females I am always concerned about a uterine infection called pyometra as well. It can cause lots of vague symptoms. I would recommend taking a fresh poop sample with you when you go to the veterinarian as well. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. There are a few oral products that generally work very well for ticks if you can get them. They are Nexgard and Simparica. They are tablets that you give once a month. Both dogs should be started on this medications your veterinarian agreed. First you will need to speak with your veterinarian to make sure these medications are not contraindicated. Most parents can take them but pets with seizures may not. Make sure to ask your local veterinarian if there are concerns for tickborne diseases in your area. If so, your veterinarian may want to treat the pets prophylactically. Treating the local environment as best you can with insecticides may also help. I hope this gives you some ideas. Best of luck.

Hello there! I am very concerned about Sammy. A dog of this age collapsing could indicate an age-related issue like arthritis, but it could also indicate something more sinister, like cancer. I strongly recommend that you check the color of Sammy's gums to be sure that they are pink and moist. A pale color to the gums could mean that Sammy is bleeding somewhere internally, and could have caused the collapse and heavy breathing. This would warrant an immediate trip to an emergency veterinary hospital. If he's nice and pink, it can probably wait until tomorrow, seeing as Sammy is acting normal and eating/drinking well. One incidence of vomiting is usually not something to worry about, but it could be an additional symptom of something else going on. Ticks can transmit diseases that cause these symptoms (such as lyme or rocky mountain spotted fever), so these should be assessed by your vet when you visit. I strongly suggest making an appointment tomorrow if possible. I would expect that they will take some blood, and potentially perform an x-ray (along with a complete physical exam). I would take Chappie into a vet immediately. It's very concerning that she isn't eating or drinking at all, and with the vomiting, she will quickly become dehydrated. I would take Cyfer into the vet immediately, as it sounds like he is suffering from a tick borne illness. He needs medical attention right away, and the vet can use blood tests to diagnose if he's suffering from a tick borne illness and treat him accordingly.
