My dog won't eat and keeps vomiting after drinking. Is it serious?

Chronic vomiting, has multiple causes but may cause an electrolyte imbalance which could account for the symptoms you are seeing. If he is drinking more water than usual, he should be seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork to rule out kidney disease, diabetes or other GI issues. When a pet is vomiting, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If he won't eat, serve the food warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not or if the appetite does not return, then you will need to see your veterinarian.

If he keeps it down, you can offer more water and small amount of bland food (cooked chicken or other lean meat) in the next 1-2hrs. If he is taking the food and keeping all down you should give him more every 2-3hrs. However, if Chapo continues to vomit, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment today. Vomiting in otherwise healthy dog is usually caused by stomach upset from gastrointestinal infection, inflamed pancreas, abdominal pain.

If Tison is a normal weight then I’m not as concerned about the irregular eating pattern. Many dogs self regulate and only eat what they need and vary the amount based on their activity. If he has an empty stomach he could be vomiting from stomach acid buildup. Usually feeding a treat or small meal if he will eat it can reduce the vomiting. You may also want to try another good quality food to see if that improves his eating. It’s best if dogs eat at least once daily. If he has a poor hair coat, is thin or lethargic then this behavior could be a sign of an underlying medical problem that should be treated. He could have intestinal parasites, a food allergy or GI condition. In that case I recommend a veterinary exam and lab tests to determine the problem and get the appropriate treatment. I was the Vet that answered your last question. If no tests were done we do not know what Popy's disease is. She needs blood work and at least X-rays of her belly. If tests were done then please post the results or sign up for a consult. Causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, foreign body (ate something that is stuck requiring surgery to remove), kidney or liver failure, cancer, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, etc. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Unfortunately, those are quite nonspecific symptoms, and could be consistent with almost any illness. If Prince isn't eating or drinking, and is vomiting, he really needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your vet can determine quite a lot by a good exam, and will then be able to recommend any appropriate diagnostic tests to determine what's wrong. At the very least, your vet can help Prince feel better with supportive care to control his nausea, and give fluids to correct his dehydration. I worry especially with his young age and being such a little guy, he can become dehydrated quickly. I hope he feels better soon!

Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral infections (like parvo), foreign body ingestion (something is stuck and requires surgery to remove), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, ingested something that is upsetting her stomach, food allergies or intolerance. If Charlie is vomiting while being fasted he should be seen today on Emergency. You can with hold water for 4-6 hours and food until monday am. Offer water after 4-6 hours as ice chips and as small amounts. If there is no further vomiting by the morning then offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. Feed as small frequent meals. If Charlie continues to vomit while fasted, after water or food is reintroduced or will not eat he needs to see a Vet. Causes of diarrhea can be from: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), new treats/dog food/table food, toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance. If Rosebud is fully vaccinated and has been thoroughly dewormed and has had stool samples checked then I would with hold food for 12-24 hours. Do not take away water unless vomiting. After the fast offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools.
