My dog threw up multiple times and is hiding. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

my rat terrier threw up three regurgitated 3 times after he woke up in the middle of the night afterwards he seemed scared and hid in the corner of my bed he ate if the food was in my hand same for water. he is currently sleeping of a potty pad i put on my bed i was wondering if i should be concerned

I am sorry to hear about Chewie. If his energy levels appear normal and he has stopped vomiting you can continue to observe him. We normally recommend nothing orally for 6 to 8 hours (no food or water) after vomiting to give the stomach a rest and then slowly reintroduce water then food http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=353. If he continues to vomit then a vet exam is needed. Other reasons to seek veterinary care include lethargy/weakness, pale gums, painful or swollen abdomen, or vomiting blood.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chewie. Are you missing anything in the home that he may have eaten resulting in a blockage? If so, he will need x-rays. Typically with an obstruction though, the pet continues to vomit any food and water consumed. Most dogs are acting very ill as well. If he continues to vomit, begins to act ill or you know something is missing, then he should be seen right away. Otherwise, it should be safe to monitor him as it sounds like he is improving. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are a few possibilities here. One possibility is that he has dietary indiscretion (upset stomach) which is causing him these signs. Another possibility (and more concerning) is something like a gastrointestinal obstruction causing him the signs. I would recommend a visit to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may take abdominal radiographs and consider symptomatic treatment to make him feel better right away. I would shy away from those treats in the future. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog is vomiting, sluggish, and has hypothyroidism. What can I do?

I'm sorry that Chewie is not feeling well. Unfortuantely, vomiting is a very non-specific symptom. Pretty much anything can cause vomiting in dogs so I cannot tell you why this is happening. You are doing just right by withholding food. Just be sure to offer only small amounts of water at a time. If he continues to vomit in the next 6-8 hours you should get him to the vet right away. Continued vomiting can be serious.

My dog is throwing up phlegm, not eating or drinking. Should I worry?

I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or persistent inappetence. My dog hit his head, then threw up 12 hours later. Should I worry?

I am not too worried from this single episode of vomiting. There is no way to evaluate an animal for concussion, so we just watch their behaviors and appearance. As long as Wrigley is walking normal, has a normal activity level, eyes appear normal and they are identical to each other, and he continues to have a good appetite, I don't think he needs to see a vet. Of course, if anything changes or you are very concerned, he needs to be examined by a veterinarian and have a thorough neurologic examination.

Hi there and thanks for your post. Vomiting along with decreased energy does sound concerning. There are many health problems that could be a potential cause here that will need to be explored with Chewy's veterinarian. I would recommend taking Chewy into see his veterinarian as soon as possible. Bacterial or viral infections, pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease, gastrointestinal obstructions, among other causes are all possibilities. Your veterinarian will do an exam along with testing his stool and running some blood work or taking a few x-rays if needed to help determine a cause. My dog threw up and had accidents, but now seems okay. What next?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bear. If he is feeling better, it is likely ok for you to continue to monitor him. If he continues to vomit or have accidents though, he will need to see his veterinarian. He likely had the accidents as he was not feeling well earlier this morning. Be sure to offer plenty of water, but if he is otherwise healthy, I would withhold food for about 12 hours. This will rest his GI tract and help to prevent any further vomiting. Puppy threw up twice but seems fine. Should I worry or call vet?

If Jordy continues to vomit, starts dry heaving, or is extremely lethargic, I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic tonight or first thing in the morning. If he is normal the rest of the night, give him a half his normal breakfast and monitor for more vomiting. If he does continue to vomit, he'll need to go to vet. Common causes of vomiting in puppies include foreign bodies, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, some metabolic disorders, and mild gastroenteritis if unknown origin. If he does end up needing to go to the vet, they will likely take some x-rays and maybe do a baseline blood work, and then treat him symptomatically if they are do not find a specific.
