When can I give deworming pills after my dog stops vomiting?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

Good morning, my dog has the bad habit of licking everything and has to be dewormed regularly. He has been having soft stools with mucus for a bit, gave him chicken and rice and he went better. Yesterday he started vomiting foam with blood, took him to the vet, gave him sulcrate suspension plus and a dewormer, drontal plus 22.7 mg, yesterday was fine and the vomiting stopped, today he is just sad but he eats. Should I give him the pills? Doctor is not available right now.

Fred is such a cutie! I'm sorry he's been so ill lately, however. Given that he just stopped vomiting, I would hold off on giving him the Drontal for now. A side effect of Drontal can be GI upset, and it would be better to wait until he hasn't been vomiting for 48 hours before giving it to him.

Drontal Plus is extremely effective for treating tapeworms. However, I am concerned that if he vomited soon after giving the medication, there is a chance it did not absorb. I recommend that you call your veterinarian for a second dose - it will be safe to re-dose - just to be on the safe side! Next time give it at meal time so there is a lot of food in his stomach as this makes it less likely he will vomit the pill.

My dog vomits after wormer. Is it effective? What dewormer is safe?

If your dog is sick three hours after giving the worming treatment, this should be sufficient time for the worming treatment to be absorbed. To err on the side of caution, if your dog is known to be infested with worms, it might be a good idea to re-treat him in a week's time with a different product. I'm not sure which product you are currently using, but I recommend using Drontal. You can get a Drontal tablet from your vet. If that doesn't make him sick, you can use it as your regular worming treatment.

My dog threw up after roundworm medicine. Should I redose him?

Poor guy. If he vomited within 1 hr of giving the medication, he likely vomited it back up. However, if you are still unsure and didn't see the pill within the vomit, it is best to wait at least 3 days, give a second dose, then wait 2 weeks and give a 3rd dose just to make sure he gets the medication. Should I worry about side effects after giving my dog Drontal Plus?

Hello, this medication is generally very well tolerated by our patients. Very rarely, this medication may cause some vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite. Otherwise, he should not have any side effects from this deworming. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Dog has roundworms. How long to wait for dewormer after Droncit?

I would wait one week before giving the nitroscanate since it also contains a medication to treat tapeworms (as does the Droncit). If you can give a different dewormer that does not contain a tapeworm medication (like Drontal - not Drontal Plus) then you can give it now.

Dog puked after dewormer. Is it still effective or needs redosing?

If your dog vomited more than an hour after the medication was given it is probably OK and in his system. However, if the dog vomited before an hour had passed then you will need to redose your dog with another round of dewormer. This medication is very safe and redosing should not cause a problem. It is not uncommon for dogs to vomit after medication and generally if it is more then 2 hours after the medication should have worked. As the food was undigested it may not have been absorbed as well as anticipated and it may be worth applying a different type of spot on medication, especially if you are in a heartworm affected area.
