Can my dog get arthritis from sleeping on a hard floor or cement?

Congratulations on your new dog! It is possible that Coco is feeling too warm for her comfort level and therefore prefers to sleep on the cooler floor. Some dogs just have this preference. The only time it can be concerning is in larger breed heavy dogs they can develop what is called a hygroma of the elbow where they develop a fluid filled pocket due to the pressure on the thin skin near the elbow. Yes, it is safe for him to sleep on this bedding. Once he is through his chewing and destructive phase, he can have a normal bed. You wan to be sure to keep him safe and remove any bedding he wants to tear up so that he does not get an intestinal blockage. I hope this helps.

It's fine that Rusty sleeps on the floor, and I would just make sure there is at least a blanket if the floor isn't carpeted to help keep him from developing callous from sleeping on a hard surface. To trim his nails, you can get dog specific nail trimmers from a pet store. While there, you can also get a dog specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Do not use human toothpaste on Rusty because it contains fluoride which is toxic to dogs.

Poor Tobi! At his age, arthritis and back issues are very common. He should be seen by a vet to determine which joints are affected and if he can tolerate pain medication and joint supplements. I hope all is well!

Many dogs get too hot in the night and want to sleep on the floor. Also if he's now bigger it may be crowded and he needs to stretch out. This is not a problem usually. Since she’s such a large dog, odds are good that she’s starting to show signs of arthritis, despite having excellent familial hip screenings. Arthritis can occur with age and can affect any joint. The hips, knees, elbows, and vertebral column are all commonly affected areas. Joint supplements including glucosamine and chondroitin can help slow the progression of arthritis and prescription anti-inflammatory pain medications can help to manage pain. At this point, your best option is to take Asta to her vet for an exam. Your vet will be able to determine if/where arthritis is present and will then prescribe any necessary medications.
