My dog ate unknown mushrooms and got sick. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 months and 27 days old | 68 lbs

He ate a few mushrooms today before I could get them out of his mouth he swallowed them. I’m the forest not sure what type of mushrooms they were tbh. About 39 minutes later he started to get super slobbery/foamy, and had diarrhea and vomited several times. In one of the times he vomited I saw the mushrooms come out. that was at about 10:45 AM it’s now 1:30 PM the vomiting and diarrhea has stopped. He’s been drinking water and is sleeping now. no more foamy mouth. Advice/scenarios?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am concerned that because he vomited so many times and had diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated. Also, mushrooms can result in liver toxicity in dogs that tends to be significant. Even if he vomited some of it, there is still likely some left in his system. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check some basic lab work to check for signs of liver toxicity and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

Unfortunately I'm not sure what species these mushrooms are - I think even a mushroom expert would have difficulty identifying mushrooms that have been ingested and then vomited. Various mushrooms can cause gastrointestinal upset, bloody diarrhea, hallucinations, muscle tremors, or in rare situations liver failure. If Ace vomits again, develops diarrhea, seems disoriented or has muscle tremors I would recommend contacting the emergency vet. If they did not perform screening blood work that might be a good idea as well.

I'm hoping the mushrooms were benign and Ace will be feeling fine in the morning!

This type of intoxication could be causing an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver).
A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly symptomatic treatment may be necessary.

I am glad that Finely is better today but I would highly recommend a Vet exam. Other causes could be kidney problems, vestibular disease or infectious causes (like tick borne disease). If you can't take him to the Vet then continue to tempt him to eat and drink and watch him closely. Ideally he should have an appointment today with your Vet. My dog is vomiting, has diarrhea, and is tired. When to see a vet?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Moka is having problems. Yes, any pet that has persistent signs especially vomiting and diarrhea should be evaluated immediately. Once dehydration and electrolyte imbalance develop, they will just continue to get weaker and weaker unless treated. Reasons for vomiting/diarrhea are many and range from intestinal problems or problems with other organs in the body causing the signs. Intestinal worms, dietary indiscretion (eating things she is not supposed to eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, a foreign body (especially in younger dogs), infection, inflammation, toxins, pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, etc. Your vet can do a physical exam and some tests which could include a fecal exam, blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to try to determine what is causing the problem. Once a diagnosis is made they will advise a treatment plan to address the issue. Your vet can also address the itching of her muzzle and whining which may or may not be related. I hope this is just temporary and it resolves quickly for you and Moka.

My puppy ate a mushroom in the yard. Is it poisonous? What's the next step?

How naughty of Sadie! You did the right thing by taking the mushroom away from her. Unfortunately, mushrooms can be very tricky to identify accurately. Many species of mushrooms can lead to neurologic changes or liver damage when ingested by dogs. I recommend taking Sadie to your vet or an emergency clinic right away so that vomiting can be induced (assuming that she ate the mushroom within the past 2 hours) and supportive medications can be started. It is likely that Sadie may need to have blood testing performed today and repeated in 1-2 days to assure that her liver values remain stable. Even though she may have only eating a very small amount of the mushroom, problems could still arise and it is better to be safe than sorry. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Sadie!

Hello. I am sorry that your concerns were not addressed earlier, but this is a good time to re-evaluate Delilah. If it has been several hours since her possible encounter with the mushrooms, & she is fine - no drooling, gagging, vomiting, lethargy or diarrhea - then I would not be too worried about her getting sick. My dog ate flower petals and has diarrhea. Should I go to the vet?

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. In this case, dietary indiscretion is possible given that petals were ingested. Assuming the petals were not from a toxic flower, you could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. If no improvement is noted, I recommend that you have Moose evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. If there is concern that these petals were from a toxic flower/plant, he should be evaluated right away. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

My dog vomited white foam and has black diarrhea after eating liver.

Hi there. I would recommend having San seen by your vet. With diarrhea that hasn't resolved, he may need medication to stop the diarrhea. I would also recommend discontinuing feeding him liver. It sounds like his digestive system cannot tolerate liver well, and keeping him on a normal diet of a quality dog food will be easier on his system.
