My dog has a skin infection. How long to heal & for hair to regrow? Best shampoos?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 82 lbs

Hi I did receive an answer from my previous question. I wasn’t sure how to respond. I do not know much as far as history and neither did the worker at pound because his previous owner just dumped him there at the gate . As far as his skin I have been told that the bacterial infection is skin the back of his legs are the only affected area. Typically how long would it take to cure and for his skin to grow back? Also what are recommended shampoos for his breed?

Hello and thank you for your questions about Gunner. I cannot see your previous question but I will answer this question as best I can. Skin infections can vary in healing times based upon how long the infection is present, how deep in the skin the bacteria have penetrated and if there are any underlying allergies. Typically treatment for skin issues is 10 days - 6 weeks. If there are underlying skin issues (or even endocrine gland issues) then the condition will become reoccurring and difficult to clear.
For general purpose, oatmeal types shampoos tend to do well for most dogs as it generally doesn't overly dry the skin.
I would recommend to have an appointment with a local vet to examine Gunner's skin and see if they feel additional treatment or medicated shampoo is needed. Aside from allergies and endocrine disorders, parasites and fungus can also cause hair loss.

You will first need to determine the type of infection. A recheck with your veterinarian would be recommended. Samples can be submitted for fungal culture as well as for bacterial culture and sensitivity. If it is a fungal infection, your vet can dispense an antifungal. Some of these infections can take weeks t months to resolve. If it is a bacterial infection, the sensitivity panel should determine the most effective antibiotic to use in treatment. Allergies should also be ruled out as an underlying cause. They can be frustrating to diagnose since they have multiple causes (food, environmental, parasites). Dog skin infection: natural help for itching & hair growth?

Yogurt does have some probiotics to help balance out the antibiotics, but it also contains milk, which can give some dogs diarrhea. I would recommend that you use a probiotic supplement from the pet store as it will have a mixture of beneficial bacteria that are specific for a dog's GI tract. Oatmeal can be very soothing. I really like Dechra DermaLyte Shampoo because it is very easy on their skin, it doesn't contain any soap/detergent that will dry out the skin. Another supplement that you can use to help with Maverick's skin is fish oil. You can get a human fish oil supplement and squeeze the capsule over his food twice a day. The major side effects of fish oil supplementation is fishy breath and greasy stools. As long as Maverick's skin is not scarred, his hair should eventually grow back but it can take several weeks to months depending on how fast his hair grows.

Hello. We will often see some subtle indications of a bacterial infection under the hair, especially after long or thick hair has been shaved off. You can bathe Bruce in any OTC antibacterial shampoo ( either with benzyl peroxide or chlorhexidine ) twice a week for 2-3 weeks & this should take care of the problem. Hello. It appears that Bruno has a pretty significant & chronic inflammatory reaction going on in his skin. I would suspect that this may require oral medications rather than topical ointments or creams, but knowing how long this might take to clear up really depends on the underlying cause. If he has a bacterial infection, treatment can last 6-8 weeks, a fungal infection, 2-4 months, & if this is due to an allergic reaction, unless you pursue a desensitization protocol, treatment is lifelong. It is best to have your veterinarian examine Bruno to determine the best course of action. If your vet is unable to help, ask for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. Will my dog's fur grow back after a tail skin infection heals?

Hi and thanks for posting! If the infection on his tail is healing or is close to fully healed, it may take 2-4 weeks for the hair to grow back in that area. Sometimes, however if the infection is severe enough and leaves scar tissue in the area, the hair may not grow back fully. I hope this helps and best of luck!

Why is my dog losing weight, hair, and has skin infections?

I’m so sorry to hear about Sargeant. Though your question focuses on the skin, I must insert that weight loss in any dog - but an older dog particularly- is very concerning. Liver, kidney, and heart disease, as well as cancer are the things I would want to rule out first. If you have not yet run a basic blood panel on Sargeant, I would highly encourage it. In terms of the skin, underlying allergies can cause repeated skin infections and hair loss. If Sargeant is itchy, talk to your vet about possibly pursuing allergy treatments. A trial treatment for mites is also a good idea. Finally ringworm, auto-immune disease, and others are possibilities. Best of luck to you and Sargeant!

Hello, It would be helpful to know what your veterinarian recommended for the next step of Bella's treatment at her recheck. Fungal infections that are not responding to topical treatment often require a course of oral medications. Skin is the largest organ in the body, so it takes the longest to respond to infection treatments. Many skin infections require a full 6-8 weeks of treatment. Skin infections can also be complicated by allergies, underlying endocrine disease, or associated immune mediated or dermatological disease.
