My dog's tongue swelled up and she's drooling. What can I give her?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

My pups tongue suddenly swelled up. She is drooling alot. No fever, still drinking water, still wants attention. As far as I know she has not injured herself or eaten anything not allowed. She is breathing fine and her nose is cold and wet.

It is possible she trying to eat a bee or other insect and got stung. You can try giving her some Benadryl. At 80 pounds she would need 3 of the 25mg capsules and you can give that same dose every 8-12 hours. If no improvement in 24-36 hours she really needs to see a vet.

Oh no, poor Allie! She could have injured her mouth, could have been stung by a bee or an insect, or she could be suffering from an allergy. The problem with swelling around her mouth is that it can increase to a point where it interferes with her breathing and leads to respiratory distress. Rinse her mouth out with cool water to make sure it is flushed out, and monitor her for now. If her face keeps on swelling, she continues to drool excessively, or she starts having problems breathing, she will need to see a vet immediately. In that case, please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Hi , it could be that Peter has been stung by an insect by looking at the swelling. The oedema (swelling) is most likely due to vasodilation and in this case most likely to a reaction to an insect bite. You can try to give him Benadryl to see if the swelling comes down, the dosage is 1 mg/pound. Benadryl can cause drowsiness and lethargy. If the swelling should progress and extend I would recommend that he is checked over urgently as it could impair his breathing. Hope this helps !

Check for any injuries or sting marks. If there are puncture wounds that ooze blood this may be a snake bite and you need to take Rikke to a vet right away. If it is an allergic reaction and not a swollen face due to snake bite, or a tooth root abscess or injury in the mouth or obstructed salivary duct or swollen salivary gland, then you can try Benadryl. Unfortunately we are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. My dog is weak, can't stand, eat, or swallow. Could it be a bee sting?

Dogs can be allergic to bees and stings will swell. It could be possible that she was stung by a bee, but my answer is still the same, she needs emergency veterinary care now. Swelling from bee stings in the mouth can and do cause the airways to be blocked off, leading to respiratory distress and death. She sounds very ill, and if there was anything you could do at home for her, I would tell you. There honestly isn't, she needs to see a vet right away.

It is only dangerous if the swelling is causing her to have difficulty breathing. Getting her to a vet is the best option but if you want to try something at home you can give Benadryl by mouth at 1mg per pound of body weight (example, if she is 25 pounds, she would get 25 mg). Always let the vet know when she is vaccinated in the future that she had a previous reaction.

Hi there, if this swelling has just happened today and Nala is having heavy breathing still, I would recommend taking her to a vet as an emergency. She may be having an allergic reaction. However, if this has progressed slowly over a few days, it may be associated with a tooth infection. This is less of an emergency, but she should be seen by a vet during the next business day. There are a few other illnesses with similar symptoms, your vet will ask more questions and be able to examine her mouth and listen to her lungs.

Hello, sorry to hear about Al. He can have up to 160 mg of benadryl every 8 - 12hours. I would increase his dose to 80 -100mg every 8 hours and see if that helps decrease the swelling. Otherwise, you may be able to be seen by Virginia -Maryland School of Veterinary Medicine since they have a 24h emergency room. That is located in Blacksburg. You can also try to ice the leg to decrease some of the swelling. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog is sneezing non-stop with swollen glands. Vet or Benadryl?

It's possible Lily snorted something up into one of her nasal passages and she's trying to clear it out by sneezing and you just can't see it. It's also possible she's having some trouble with allergies. Lymph nodes don't usually get swollen with allergies though. Before you give her Benadryl I would check in with your vet first to make sure it's not something more concerning. Also, you don't want to mask the symptoms with Benadryl if there is something else going on. Good luck and I hope Lily feels better soon!
