My dog's mouth is swollen, eye red, drooling, and breathing hard. Why?

Breathing from the mouth is very concerning and is a sign of possible heart disease or failure, and this unfortunately is common in Honey's breed and at her age. It is hard to tell from the picture, but if the facial swelling is of the skin and is around the eyes and the muzzle, this could be a bug bite and you can try an anti-histamine. You have to be careful with human drugs as any product with a 'non-drowsy' can be very toxic and fatal in dogs. I would suggest calling your local emergency clinic or vet to get information on over the counter drugs available in your area. Benedryl and Reactine can be used, but you have to make sure it is the right version without pseudoephedrine. If Honey is unable to breath, seems distressed, or if her tongue looks blue at all, then you need to get her to a vet right away. Best of luck with Honey, I hope she feels better soon.

This swelling in Zues's mouth could be due to a dental problem, trauma to his mouth, or an allergic reaction. Because swelling of the mouth can progress to affect his breathing, I would monitor him for now, and take him into a vet immediately if he starts to have difficulty breathing. Otherwise, I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning to have his mouth examined, diagnosed, and treated.

Swelling of the face and mouth/facial swelling are often initial symptoms of an anaphylactic/allergic reaction. These reactions can occur in dogs after vaccines, after exposure to a food or substance they are allergic to, or after a bite from an insect. As it is impossible to predict whether an anaphylactic reaction will remain localized or progress to trouble breathing, which can be life threatening, it is safest to contact a 24 hour vet for Bella at this time to have her seen. The ER may recommend a treatment plan including anti-histamines, corticosteroids +/- epinephrine and montitoring until the selling has gone down. They will also likely recommend an at home dose for Benadryl after establishing a valid patient/client relationship if this should occur again as it is uncertain at this point what Bella is allergic to. This sounds like an allergic reaction to possibly an insect bite or some other allergen. If your dog has respiratory problems (breathing difficulty) she needs to be seen by a veterinarian or in a Pet ER for an exam right away. If she has no trouble breathing you can observe this and the swelling should go away within 24 hours. However if it does not, take Dimond to a veterinarian tomorrow.

I would recommend taking Rozzi to a veterinarian. I would call yours in the morning. It is difficult to say definitively what is going on but from the pictures it looks like a potential tooth root abscess. A tooth root abscess can appear as one side of the face or mouth is swollen. The way to treat this is antibiotics, pain meds and pulling the affected tooth. If the swelling gets worse overnight then I recommend an emergency veterinarian for a possible allergic reaction. Hi. That is definitely some severe swelling. Due to its location and presentation, I would be very concerned about a tooth root abscess. These can occur even if the crown of the tooth appears normal. It takes an x-ray to fully diagnose it. Other possible causes of swelling like this in a young dog could include a bite from insect or spider, injury, trauma, or infection. I recommend getting him to your veterinarian to be checked out tomorrow.
