What to do if my dog has a snake bite, swelling, and no vet nearby?

Check for any injuries or sting marks. If there are puncture wounds that ooze blood this may be a snake bite and you need to take Rikke to a vet right away. If it is an allergic reaction and not a swollen face due to snake bite, or a tooth root abscess or injury in the mouth or obstructed salivary duct or swollen salivary gland, then you can try Benadryl. I don't know what type of research you did but i would not be able to tell by the bite if it is a venomous snake or not, i strongly recommend taking him to the emergency right away as a snake bite can easily be deadly within a few hours.

He probably got bitten by either a snake or an insect, the swelling is very severe you need to try and find a vet clinic that provide out of hours service today as he might not survive, especially if it is a snake bite.

Is this the location where the envenomation occurred? There could still be residual swelling and gravity is taking it to the lowest place. Otherwise the skin could be becoming necrotic from the bite. I would recommend a follow up appointment with your veterinarian just to make sure that nothing serious is happening. I’m so glad he made it through that crisis! What a scare!

Poor Casper! I'm sorry to hear that he's injured. Without being able to examine him, I'm afraid it's hard to say what might be wrong. You're correct that the swelling could certainly be due to a snake bite. Other possibilities would include an insect bite or sting, a fractured bone in his paw or leg, an infected wound or abscess, or some other type of injury. Many of these problems can be quite serious and even life-threatening, so I would recommend taking Casper to an emergency vet tonight for treatment. The vet can examine his leg, and may also take x-rays or do other testing if needed to determine what's wrong and get him started on appropriate treatment.

If the Benadryl was effective, I would have expected to see a reduction in the swelling by now. Sometimes allergic reactions require stronger drugs to treat such a steroids, and it sounds like this may be the cause for Moose. Because the swelling hasn't reduced and the reaction appears to be progressing, it's time to see a vet immediately. Please take him into an ER vet clinic if your regular vet is closed; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Depending on the severity of the reaction to the bite or sting, your dog may require some measure of veterinary care. This could include something like a steroid shot to reduce inflammation, IV fluids to help provide supportive care, or an antivenom to combat the bite of a potentially harmful snake.
