My dog is sneezing non-stop with swollen glands. Vet or Benadryl?

Check for any injuries or sting marks. If there are puncture wounds that ooze blood this may be a snake bite and you need to take Rikke to a vet right away. If it is an allergic reaction and not a swollen face due to snake bite, or a tooth root abscess or injury in the mouth or obstructed salivary duct or swollen salivary gland, then you can try Benadryl. Unfortunately we are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. Unfortunately, it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to prescribe any drugs, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because we can't say for sure it's safe for Moana to take a particular drug. You are correct that the swelling could be due to you two bumping heads, and Benadryl will not help that (it would be used for an allergic reaction). I would continue to ice the swelling for five minutes at a time a couple of times tonight, but if the swelling continues to get worse or she starts to have difficulty breathing, then I would take her into a vet immediately.

Reverse sneezing looks and sounds very aggressive but it is quite benign. The bulbs you are seeing are likely is salivary glands or lymph nodes but of course, I cannot say for sure without doing an exam of my own. For the reverse sneezing you can try Benadryl. See the link below. Since I cannot confirm that those “bulbs” are normal for her and since you don’t recall these previously, I would have your vet take a look at them. Oh my. Swelling of the jaw is extremely problematic because of the close proximity to the throat. Benadryl doesn't always work as efficiently as a steroid shot would, to control an allergic reaction. And the oral Benadryl can take several hours to work. I would recommend taking Lolla to the vet right away for a steroid injection to get this under control quickly. I hope Lolla's swollen jowl returns to normal soon.

If this has been going on for several days without any improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Ivy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may or may not need an antibiotic if this is an upper respiratory infection. If she has not had an antihistamine before, you can always try Benadryl or Zyrtec but I would discuss this with your vet first. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. If Jada continues to have excess salivation through to the morning, or starts coughing, has a loss of appetite, vomits, keeps sneezing, or becomes lethargic, then I would take her into the vet. Best of luck.

If there are lumps on his throat and he is having upper respiratory symptoms, I would recommend having x-rays of his upper airway done to see if there is any compression or deviation of the airway due to one of the lumps. He may also be dealing with allergies, in which case you can try an antihistamine. Most people use 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours for Benadryl. The vet can also insert a small needle into the masses and examine them under a microscope for a better understanding of what the lumps might be. I hope this helps!
