Why is my dog's right paw swollen? When should I see a veterinarian?

The paws are extremely swollen, it could be an infection or due to repetitive trauma, it could also be an allergic reaction or an insect bite. my recommendation would be to take her to your vet ASAP for treatment.

Hi Carel! If Bodhi was my dog, I would have him seen by a vet for this problem. It's concerning that his paw is still swollen, and he is having pain if the area is tender when you palpate the paw. This could be from an injury or this could be edema due to a systemic disease or infection. It is hard to say. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having x-rays taken of the foot and leg. I would also recommend blood testing to see if there are any changes that might suggest why the foot is swollen. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would take Luna into the vet. It could be that she has developed an infection from chewing her paws raw, or it could be that the sock was too tight and causing the swelling. She is showing you it's painful because she's having trouble putting weight on it. Have this checked out by a vet today. Best of luck.

If it is cutting off circulation, I think it would be wise to take her in to a veterinarian to have it removed so that circulation can be restored. It should also be examined closely for injuries in the skin. Sometimes they will need oral antibiotics and pain medication. Please do not give any type of human pain medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol to her as these medications can cause serious side effects in animals.

Without seeing the swelling it’s hard to say what it is. A vet will likely put a needle in the swelling to get cells to look at under the microscope. This is called a fine needle aspirate. Knowing what the mass is will help decide the next course of treatment. It could be an abscess (a pocket of puss) and just need drainage and antibiotics, a cyst that could just need to be monitored or something more serious, like cancer, that needs to be surgically removed. This is likely causing Savage a great deal of pain and discomfort and further evaluation and treatment of this will require veterinary treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to appropriately medicate him for pain control and possibly sedate him so that the paw can be carefully inspected to look for possible reasons that can result in swelling such as a foreign body stuck in the paw.
