My dog's paw is swollen from matted hair. Should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My dog has a large lump of hair around her ankle/paw and it has caused her to lose circulation to her paw and it has swelled up. She will not allow us to try to cut the hair off. What should I do

If it is cutting off circulation, I think it would be wise to take her in to a veterinarian to have it removed so that circulation can be restored. It should also be examined closely for injuries in the skin. Sometimes they will need oral antibiotics and pain medication. Please do not give any type of human pain medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol to her as these medications can cause serious side effects in animals.
