Why is my dog's paw swollen for two days and what should I do?

Poor pup! Your dog's foot could be swollen from an infection, injury, foreign body, or broken bone. You can try soaking his foot in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps with the swelling. Rest him tonight, taking him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. Have him seen by a vet in the morning if his foot is still swollen. The vet can diagnose what is causing the swelling so it can be treated.

This could be an allergic reaction, an insect bite or an internal disease causing edema of the limbs, if this doesn't resolve in the next 48 hours i strongly advise taking Weiner to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

If the paw is swollen, I recommend to have her seen by her veterinarian. Swelling in the feet is not normal and may not be related to the previous paw pad issue. Hopefully it’s nothing serious. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

This is likely causing Savage a great deal of pain and discomfort and further evaluation and treatment of this will require veterinary treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to appropriately medicate him for pain control and possibly sedate him so that the paw can be carefully inspected to look for possible reasons that can result in swelling such as a foreign body stuck in the paw. This can sometimes happen, one day it looks good and does not hurt, and the next the dog injures it again because it did not hurt anymore but is not quite strong enough. I suggest that you keep your dog from getting dirt into the injury, preferably keep him from running around too much and take him back to the vet for a recheck on Monday. If the swollen area is colder than the rest of the foot, he needs to be seen by a veterinarian today, as there may be a serious problem with the blood circulation of the leg.

Hi there. So sorry that Fire is having this issue. It is difficult to tell what is going on from the photo. I see the swelling and redness for sure. It could be anything from a nail bed infection, to a foreign body (like a grass awn that has migrated under the skin) which is very common between the toes of dogs, or it could be the start of a cancer tumor. My recommendation is to get him to the vet for an exam so the proper diagnosis can be made. That way treatment can be instituted that will work. In the meantime you can soak the foot in Epsom salts to see if that will help reduce the swelling (about 10 minutes twice a day). Hope this helps. If you have more questions please post again! I would have this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having x-rays taken of the toe to make sure the toe is not broken. If there is no broken bones, then I worry about a bacterial infection and he may need to be placed on oral antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
