My dog's nose is swollen. Is it a bite or sting? What should I do?

Hello. A localized swelling like this in a relatively young dog is probably just some kind of allergic reaction. I agree with you that it is probably from an insect sting or bite. If Buddy will allow it, you can apply a cool compress or an ice cube wrapped in a wash cloth for as long as he will tolerate it. If it is not significantly down by tomorrow, you may want your vet to take a look, but there does not seem to be anything very worrisome about this. You are right, it could be an insect bite. If it's daytime where you are, I would take Shiloh into a vet now. If it's nighttime, you can wait until the morning, but rush him into an ER vet if his face starts swelling more, he gets hives, or have trouble breathing. I hope this helps!

The swelling is most likely an allergic reaction, usually from an insect bite or sting but it could be related to pollen or plant allergy. If it is not bothering Peanut at all, just monitor him at home and the swelling should disappear in less than 24hrs. If it becomes itchy and your dog stars to have fast and noisy respiration, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.

This is most likely due to an allergic reaction. On the muzzle this is usually happens with an insect sting, or reaction to a poisonous plant (i.e. poison oak). This is usually temporary, but can lead to a skin infection, so it's good to flush the area with cool water 2-3 times a day. Flush the area using a syringe or other dispensing device with cool water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate water getting near their face. I recommend having someone help you with holding Bob to make sure the area gets flushed well. After flushing, you can apply aloe gel to the area to provide more relief. If the swelling is not going down within two days, then I would reccomend taking him to the vet for an evaluation. It may take a week for it to look normal, but it should start to look better within a couple of days. These reactions have the potential to get worse, so if the swelling is increasing, or Bob is having trouble breathing, then be he should go to the vet as soon as possible for treatment. Poor Punky! If her nose is swelling you could put an ice pack on it and see if that helps. You should have your vet take a look at it to determine if treatment is needed. She may need an antibiotic to prevent infection and an anti-inflammatory to help with pain and swellimg.

Poor guy. I can understand your hesitation to take him in. It does look swollen and could very welll just be a bug bite. I would continue the small thin layer of Neosporin twice a day and continue to monitor this thing. You can also try cold compresses on it (if tolerated) for roughly 5 mins twice a day. There isn’t much else you can do for this that is available over the counter. If it does not improve or resolve within a week or two, then you will need to get your vet involved unfortunately. A skin mass would be the number one suspicion if it does not resolve itself, and a biopsy or fine needle aspirate will be the next step towards identifying what kind of mass it is. Roxie may have gotten bitten or stung by something to cause that location reaction which can be painful. An infected tooth can also cause a swelling in the area. If she is eating and drinking well and acting normal otherwise, then keep her quiet tonight and have your vet check for dental disease tomorrow. If she is lethargic and the swelling gets worse, than I would have her check at an ER tonight
