My male dog's private area is swollen and he's licking it. Is it an emergency?

This looks serious enough to take Grayson to a veterinarian. Try to see your veterinarian tomorrow, or take him to a pet ER. This looks seriously infected/inflamed and Grayson will need pain medicine and likely a prescription antibiotic to alleviate the swelling and infection. Make sure he cannot lick his prepuce and penis (either with an e-collar or a snug fitting t-shirt) as licking will introduce more bacteria.

Poor Luke! I worry he has some edema (swelling) and possibly an infection in that area. If he isn’t overweight and he doesn’t normal have this “pouch” around his prepuce then I would try to get him seen by a vet. The vet will be able to ensure his penis looks okay and there is no loss of circulation and see if he needs some anti-inflammatories and antibiotics to help it go down. I hope this helps!

He may be licking secondary to allergies for example. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar to prevent further licking and self-trauma. Your veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics. Ouch! Poor Dylan! This looks like a little local infection that he has been licking. I would place an e-collar I him to prevent licking. You can clean it with mild soap and water. And I would also put some neosporin on it twice a day. If it is not improving in the next day or two then I would definitely take him in to see your veterinarian for an exam. Your vet will be able to prescribe some oral anabiotics and some stronger topical medicine if needed. If at any point he is not eating or is lethargic then I would also take him to your vet. Thank you for providing pictures of your dog's penis! That is not normal at all, and he could have a severe infection or may have injured his penis. I'm very concerned by the appearance of it, especially the purplish bruised area. It looks very swollen, and in my opinion he needs veterinary care now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Ouch, poor guy! Plain Vaseline is better than a medication like entederm, so I’d use that to see if it helps him slide back in. However, that looks frighteningly swollen, and if it doesn’t go back in, he does need to go in to the vet. If that’s stuck out and continues to swell, the blood supply to the tip will become compromised. Sprinkling a generous amount of raw plain sugar on the exposed tip may help bring the swelling down. But, if you’re not having luck in the next hour or so, I recommend bringing him in. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Poor Brownie! Yes this looks inflammed and painful. I recommend using a cone to stop the excess licking of the area and taking him in for an exam of his penis and a urinalysis. He may have a urinary or prostate infection, or an infection in the sheath or on the penis. I don't want this to get worse and him to get dehydrated from not eating or drinking so please get an exam soon.
