My dog's penis is swollen. What first aid can I give him now?

My dog has a swollen penis can i use entederm ointment to help him until take him to the vet ?

Ouch, poor guy! Plain Vaseline is better than a medication like entederm, so I’d use that to see if it helps him slide back in. However, that looks frighteningly swollen, and if it doesn’t go back in, he does need to go in to the vet. If that’s stuck out and continues to swell, the blood supply to the tip will become compromised.

Sprinkling a generous amount of raw plain sugar on the exposed tip may help bring the swelling down. But, if you’re not having luck in the next hour or so, I recommend bringing him in.

I'm very concerned by the picture you posted. Paraphimosis (penis stuck out) can be serious if the penis is swollen and purple like that. It shouldn't be out for more than an hour.

You need to get Yoda to the Vet ASAP. They may have to sedate him or use lube and sugar to get his penis back in the prepuce!

Oh goodness! The 2 dwellings are not his testicles but the bulbourethral glands. Regardless this is very serious. I recommend immediate veterinary care. We need to decrease the penis swelling and get the penis back in to the prepuce. We do this by using lubricant, dextrose, steroids and sometimes they need to be sedated to get it up over the penis. I’d get him to the vet now. The longer you wait the increased risk there is to the tissue.

Yes, if it has been sticking out since yesterday and very swollen than he should be seen by a vet right away. It is an emergency situation as it can cause constriction of blood-flow and necrosis of the tissue which can result in amputation of the penis. Please call your vet or go to an emergency clinic.

Ideally, you should not touch his penis any longer and keep him in an area where he is not stimulated. You could sprinkle sugar on his penis to try and bring the swelling down. Ultimately, if his penis does not resolve, he will need medical attention as this can lead to severe complications and his penis may begin die due to lack of circulation. Please have him evaluated by a veterinarian if his penis does not go back into the prepuce within the next few hours after sprinkling sugar on it. If it does go down, you should really consider neutering him soon. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi, I believe you are referring to pharaphamosis. The glands in the penis swell and the penis can get stuck outside the skin. This occurs in unneutered young dogs who are sexually mature. To reduce the swelling, try an ice pack wrapped in a wet towel to the groin area. Also, lubricate it with a water based lubricant and gently massage it to try to get it back in the skin. Sugar applied to the penis itself can help reduce swelling. These things should get the penis back down and normal again. If not and it is stuck outside for more than 6 hours with no improvement, he needs to go to an emergency vet or the penis could be damaged. Good luck!

My dog's penis is swollen and won't retract. Is it an emergency?

There are a couple of things this could be causing this to happen to Bruzer. It could be that he has an erection, and the penis is swollen and the tip is out because he is aroused. He could also be suffering from paraphimosis, which is an inability to retract the penis back into the sheath. This can quickly turn into an emergency situation, as constricting of the blood flow will lead to a larger engorgement of the penis, necrosis (dead tissue), and potential damage to the urethra. Should you suspect it isn't an erection and it is paraphimosis, I will give you some advice that may help Bruzer. If his penis hasn't been out too long (less than an hour), you can try to put it back yourself. First, thoroughly clean the penis, making sure there is no foreign material (such as fur) that is wrapped around the penis. Take a bag of frozen veggies wrapped in a towel, and apply it to the penis for five minutes at a time to try to reduce the swelling. Packaged peas work very well because they are mobile around the penis. Then apply a lubricant such as KY Jelly onto the penis, and very gently try to move the penis back into the sheath. Very gently try to push the penis back into the sheath, or try to gently pull the sheath over the penis. If this does not work, or if the penis has been outside the sheath for more than 30 minutes to an hour, you will need to take Bruzer into your vet.

This is a serious edematous swelling and needs to be seen by a veterinarian today. This may be located in the preputial mucous membrane, or possibly the tip of the penis. Unfortunately I cannot determine this from the photo. Please take Tyson to a veterinarian or PetER today. You may want to put some vaseline on the swelling to keep it from drying out.

Keep him in a quiet room, use some cold packs to reduce the inflammation, if present (do not use ice directly to the part) and if you feel confident try to replace the penis in its protect position using some vaseline cream. My dog's paraphimosis swelling is worsening, what should I do?

Poor Golondrino! Since you feel that his penis is looking worse after following your vet's initial instructions, you should take him back to discuss surgical attempts to correct his paraphimosis. At home, you can try using cool compresses to cause constriction of his blood vessels, as this may help to improve the swelling. A water based lubricant can also be applied to keep the penile tissues moistened. However, since the paraphimosis is likely to persist, Golondrino will likely need to be sedated to have a purse string suture placed in his prepuce (sheath) for a few days to hold his penis in place. I hope that all goes well!
