My dog can't walk, feet swollen. I gave her paracetamol, what now?

Paracetamol is toxic to dogs and should not be given unless it is an exceptional case. It can cause liver damage and the following signs: Lethargy Swelling of the face and/or paws Difficulty breathing Brown or blue gums Vomiting Diarrhea Decreased appetite Jaundice Please do not give paracetamol to your dog.

Please do not give anything for pain unless it is specifically prescribed by your vet. The human pain relievers such as Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, etc. are all toxic to dogs. Just try to keep his movements to a minimum until he is checked by the vet.

Poor Maka. I would not recommend to give any Tylenol, ibuprofen (Advil), or naproxen (Aleve) or human prescribe meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. You can give him 1/2 tablet of baby aspirin twice a day but I would not continue this long term because it can cause an upset tummy. As soon as you’re able to talk to your vet, I would talk to him about giving something that is more appropriate for dogs. Your vet should be able prescribe him something. I hope this helps!

Please do not give Luna any paracetamol. It contains acetaminophen which has a very narrow margin of safety and can be toxic to dogs. Unfortunately many human pain relievers are toxic to dogs, and it's not recommended to give to them. Getting her into the vet tomorrow is the best idea, and I would rest her until then. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a lead only and bring her right back in when she's done. If she is having trouble standing up, help her when she gets up. Good luck!

Discontinue giving the paracetamol immediately. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) can be toxic to dogs if given in large amounts. Please have him rechecked by your veterinarian. Tell the doctor exactly how much paracetamol your dog has been given.

The effects of acetaminophen poisoning in dogs are quite serious, often causing non-repairable liver damage. Dogs will typically experience acetaminophen toxicity at over 75 mg per kg body weight - Lady Girl ingested 1000mg and the toxic dose for her would be around 2,200 mg (if she truly is 65#). She may be OK or she may get sick. There is no way to know. At this point you will just have to monitor her and see. The most common symptoms that you may notice in pets suffering from acetaminophen toxicity include: Brownish-gray colored gums Labored breathing Swollen face, neck or limbs Hypothermia (reduced body temperature) Vomiting Jaundice (yellowish color to skin, whites of eyes), due to liver damage Coma If you notice any of those signs you need to get her to a vet right away. If she has a problem with her hock (ankle) you need to get her to a vet for an exam. That way you get a proper diagnosis as to what is actually wrong with her leg and then get a medication made for dogs to help her. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Arthritis can happen in older dogs as you know. However, this is not the only condition that can cause lameness like that. I do not recommend using paracetamol without a veterinary evaluation. There are other arthritis supplements that you can start which would not hurt if this happens to not be due to arthritis and if it is, they can help a good amount. There are several joint supplements out there such as Cosequin and Dasuquin, among others. I would encourage you to start with that and if no improvement is observed, Rodger should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
