My dog's toe is swollen and sore. Can I give him Tylenol or aspirin?

Please do not give anything for pain unless it is specifically prescribed by your vet. The human pain relievers such as Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, etc. are all toxic to dogs. Just try to keep his movements to a minimum until he is checked by the vet.

I don’t recommend starting any medications without first consulting your veterinarian. Treating your pet at home without having seen your vet first could mask symptoms that could lead to a quicker diagnosis should it become necessary for your pet to be examined. Arbitrary administration of antibiotics without knowing if it is appropriate for the condition is what creates antibiotic-resistant organisms. Absolutely DO NOT give your dog Tylenol, or any other human analgesic or NSAID. At best, they cause gastric bleeding, at worst they are toxic to liver and kidneys. Consult your veterinarian before giving your dog medications of any kind.

Do not give him any over the counter human pain relievers as they can be toxic to dogs. He should be examined by a vet to treat any problems that he is having. He may need an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and your vet can prescribe the right medications to treat his problems.

Also, swelling is concerning for either a significant injury (fracture/dislocation), an infection or abscess (pocket of pus), or in older animals we worry about cancers. No, I would not give these pain medications to Dexter. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Paracetamol is toxic to dogs in large enough doses. I recommend resting Dexter until he sees the vet on Monday. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done.

No, I am afraid all of these have severe risks of toxicity for dogs and cats which is why we have specifically developed medications for dogs, such as carprofen or meloxicam, or deracoxib or similar. NSAIDs for humans can cause liver and kidney damage in dogs. Please consult your veterinarian for antiinflammatories for your dog.. There are also cheaper generic formulations than then usual name brand.

Ibuprofen is highly toxic to dogs, and even one 200mg pill tablet is enough to cause damage to internal organs in your dog. Tylenol and aspirin are both toxic. If she is in pain, unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give her. Should she appear to be in severe pain, I'd take her into an ER vet now. Otherwise, keep her confined to limit her movement, and keep her as comfortable as possible until you get her into the vet in the morning. Best of luck.
