My pug's eye is swollen with discharge. Should I go to the ER vet?

Unfortunately, I would recommed taking Doug to an ER vet. Anytime an eye condition worsens, I consider it an emergency. Eye conditions can become severe enough to permanently damage the eye very quickly and Pugs are prone to having some significant eye problems. There could be trauma to the eye itself or an infection. In order to rule these out I would suggest having the vet take a look at the eye. For trauma to the surface of the eye, a simple stain test is performed to see if there is any retention of the stain on any area of the surface of the eye. This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

The initial bump/growth may be a meibomian gland adenoma, or a chalazion, which are benign growths that often need to be removed surgically due to the irritation it causes to the eye. I suspect the recent blinking and tearing are due to an eye infection, possibly caused by irritation from the bump. This definitely warrants a visit to the vet as soon as possible, as I worry about any damage to the cornea which can worsen the problem quickly, especially if he is scratching at it. In the meantime, you can try applying a warm wet compress to the eye for 5-10 minutes at a time. I would also put an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent scratching of the eye.
