Why is my pug's eye closed? Is it an infection or injury?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend having the I examined by a veterinarian so that further testing can be done to rule out possible causes. There could be trauma to the eye itself or an infection. In order to rule these out I would suggest having the vet take a look at the eye. For trauma to the surface of the eye, a simple stain test is performed to see if there is any retention of the stain on any area of the surface of the eye. Poor guy. It looks like your poor pup has dry eye. Visit your vet and have them check his tear production. Until you can get Oscar seen, it is best to use over the counter artificial tears in the eyes to help keep them moisturized until stronger medication can be prescribed by your vet.
I do hope that Oscar's eyes improve soon! Best of luck moving forward. Take care.

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. This is a corneal injury (likely an ulcer) which in pug requires immediate check up treatment to avoid the ulceration to worsen (often pugs can have a so called ''melting ulcer'' which can lead to eye perforation quite easily).

Poor Bruno! It’s time to take him to see the veterinarian. Any eye infection that lasts for longer than two days is unlikely to be cleared by the body’s immune system. Eye infections can be present for many reasons including dry eye, corneal scratch or bacterial infection. Other causes are also possible. Have Bruno examined today as eye infections can get severe. My dog has a film over its eye. What could it be and what to do?

Pugs, as you know, are prone to develop several eye problems such as corneal ulcers and chronic inflammation of the cornea (so the cornea can become blackish on the surface due to chronic rubbing against either skin folds or cilia). I can see that there is a chronic irritation from the pics but cannot rule out the presence of corneal ulcers. This can be done by a physical examination at your local veterinarian and would be essential to give appropriate treatment. I would definitively recommend a check up to establish the presence of corneal ulcers first and then decide what treatment is needed.

My pug's eye is swollen with discharge. Should I go to the ER vet?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Chloe. It is concerning that her eye is swollen red with green discharge, and it needs to be looked at as soon as possible. That being said, given the ER hospital is two hours away, with driving and a possible wait to be seen, it may be hours before she gets in. I would take her into her vet first thing in the morning. Use a soft cloth that is damp to wipe away any discharge. I hope this helps!
