My dog's swollen anus is leaking blood and pus. Can I treat it?

Based on the location, I am concerned that the left anal sac may be the cause for the bleeding. Dogs can develop anal sac abscesses, which is an infection of the anal sac (there are two located at the margin of the anus) that can rupture to the outside. These can be painful and will often require antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to manage pain and allow healing. The other potential is an anal sac mass. Due to Ben's age I would be very concerned for this. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done from home for either of these conditions. It would be recommended to try to find the closest veterinarian to you and have Ben seen. If it is an anal sac mass, these often require surgery and have the potential to be malignant cancers.

I am suspicious that Quora may have an anal sac abscess. These situations usually need antibiotics to resolve. It sounds like Smokey may have ruptured an anal gland that became impacted and/or infected. This condition is very painful. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible for wound care and probably a course of antibiotics to help him heal faster. They can teach you how to express his anal glands or you can take him in periodically for them to do it for you as he needs it.

Yes, you can soak his rear end in a warm water/epsom salt bath or make a compress with a small washcloth soaked in epsom salt water and hold this under his tail several times daily until she gets home. This will help the area to drain, decrease pain, and help it to heal faster. Good luck!

It is hard to tell from the picture if this is due to anal gland disease or possibly tumour - I recommend you contact your vets office and advise them of the new symptoms and they can assess the full picture in light of his recent issues. Biopsy may be required to investigate fully, if due to primary anal gland inflammation, diet manipulation can help significantly in reducing recurrence

This is probably a prostate disease (cancer or infection), this is common in unneautered older dogs, the vet will check the prostate, if it is enlarged he will need to have an ultrasound or CT done to find out if it is a cancer or an infection, he will need to be neutered ASAP.
