Why is my dog's anus bleeding? No vet nearby, what can I do?

My dogs anus has started bleeding but not sure why. There are no vets around where we live. What do I do and what is it?

Based on the location, I am concerned that the left anal sac may be the cause for the bleeding. Dogs can develop anal sac abscesses, which is an infection of the anal sac (there are two located at the margin of the anus) that can rupture to the outside. These can be painful and will often require antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to manage pain and allow healing. The other potential is an anal sac mass. Due to Ben's age I would be very concerned for this. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done from home for either of these conditions. It would be recommended to try to find the closest veterinarian to you and have Ben seen. If it is an anal sac mass, these often require surgery and have the potential to be malignant cancers.

Oh my. Poor Ben. Bleeding inside the rectum is not a good sign unfortunately. A mass inside the rectum is a feasible possibility considering the fact that anal gland don’t usually bleed out the rectum in this fashion because a small duct is the only opening to the rectum from the anal glands. It is more likely the bleeding is coming from the colon and a bleeding ulcerated mass has to be seriously considered. Your vet should be able to do a rectal exam and/or endoscopy to look for a possible mass and help you with your decision making moving forward. I hope everything turns out ok for your pet Ben. My dog has a sudden, bloody sore on his rear. What should I do?

Based on the location (it appears to be just to the side and just below the anus), an anal gland abscess may have ruptured. I doubt it’s an insect bite, but I can’t rule that out completely. It could also be another type of mass such as a tumor or a foreign body (such as a grass seed) that’s burrowed into the skin and caused an abscess. Regardless, your instincts are correct; this likely needs to be treated with antibiotics. Put an E -collar (cone of shame) on him and make an appointment with your vet ASAP. Hope that’s helpful! My dog's swollen anus is leaking blood and pus. Can I treat it?

Ouch, poor Early! If you are seeing blood and pus along with brown fluid, it sounds like his anal sacs may have become infected and have now ruptured. With the presence of pus, there isn't anything you can do at home for him. I would take him into a vet as soon as possible to have this area cleaned and examined. If his anal sac has ruptured, it will need to be sutured closed and he will need antibiotics for infection.

Why is my dog still bleeding from his bottom after vet treatment?

Hello. Dark blood like this at the anus may indicate a polyp or tumor in the rectum or anal area. It can sometimes be difficult to feel this with a finger during a recital exam. but if it is close enough to the anal opening, it might be accessible. Aside from a bleeding mass, other causes can be chronic colitis or anal sacs infections. Your vet may need to sedate him to do a more thorough rectal digital exam, or consider using a scope to look up in there to see if there is anything. Best of luck. My dog has a bloody lump near her anus. Is it a hemorrhoid? What now?

It is hard to tell for sure by the pictures, but my suspicion would be that it is either a perianal tumor that has bled, or potentially a ruptured anal sac abscess. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If it is an abscess then antibiotics will likely be needed. If it is a tumor then the veterinarian can discuss options with you. Often perianal tumors are benign. Your dog may have an injury in his anus or rectum, or a polyp or he may have an impacted anal gland. I strongly recommend you take him to your veterinarian as an impacted or infected anal gland is very painful and needs to be evacuated, or lanced and flushed. Poor Jameson! Bleeding like this could be due to an internal injury, problems with the rectum or anus, parasites in the stool, or irritation/inflammation of the lower GI tract. If his bleeding is not stopping, or has been ongoing a while, it is best to schedule a vet visit to check for these issues and get started on treatment.
