My dog has a bleeding rectal hole with white discharge. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 5 years and 11 months old

Hello my name is Carrie and my dog's name is smokey. Smokey's side of his rectum has a hole that is a size of a quarter, and is bleeding and had some type of white stuff come out earlier. Now he will not eat or drink water, and when I try to take him outside, so he can do his business, he will not do either. I clean out his wound with peroxide and neosporin. I was wondering what I can do, because I am really worried ?

It sounds like Smokey may have ruptured an anal gland that became impacted and/or infected. This condition is very painful. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible for wound care and probably a course of antibiotics to help him heal faster. They can teach you how to express his anal glands or you can take him in periodically for them to do it for you as he needs it.
