My dog has a bleeding rectal hole with white discharge. What's wrong?

Your dog may have an injury in his anus or rectum, or a polyp or he may have an impacted anal gland. I strongly recommend you take him to your veterinarian as an impacted or infected anal gland is very painful and needs to be evacuated, or lanced and flushed. Please take Loki to a veterinarian ASAP.

This is most likely due to a ruptured anal gland abscess. Have her examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. Your veterinarian should check the other gland and express (empty) it if necessary. Antibiotics will probably be dispensed. Pain medication may also be dispensed if indicated. place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking until she has healed.

Ouch, poor Early! If you are seeing blood and pus along with brown fluid, it sounds like his anal sacs may have become infected and have now ruptured. With the presence of pus, there isn't anything you can do at home for him. I would take him into a vet as soon as possible to have this area cleaned and examined. If his anal sac has ruptured, it will need to be sutured closed and he will need antibiotics for infection.

Oh my. Poor Ben. Bleeding inside the rectum is not a good sign unfortunately. A mass inside the rectum is a feasible possibility considering the fact that anal gland don’t usually bleed out the rectum in this fashion because a small duct is the only opening to the rectum from the anal glands. It is more likely the bleeding is coming from the colon and a bleeding ulcerated mass has to be seriously considered. Your vet should be able to do a rectal exam and/or endoscopy to look for a possible mass and help you with your decision making moving forward. I hope everything turns out ok for your pet Ben. Based on the location (it appears to be just to the side and just below the anus), an anal gland abscess may have ruptured. I doubt it’s an insect bite, but I can’t rule that out completely. It could also be another type of mass such as a tumor or a foreign body (such as a grass seed) that’s burrowed into the skin and caused an abscess. Regardless, your instincts are correct; this likely needs to be treated with antibiotics. Put an E -collar (cone of shame) on him and make an appointment with your vet ASAP. Hope that’s helpful! It could be these "butt pimples" you've heard people refer to are the anal sacs. These are two, small sacs located just inside the anus that release a smelly fluid when feces pass to help lubricate it on the way out. They can become impacted and then infected, and given your description, it is possible that Boy's have become infected. I would have him seen today by a vet. If they become too infected, they can rupture. The vet can examine his anal sacs, flush them out if needed, and prescribe antibiotics if there is an infection.

Based on the location, I am concerned that the left anal sac may be the cause for the bleeding. Dogs can develop anal sac abscesses, which is an infection of the anal sac (there are two located at the margin of the anus) that can rupture to the outside. These can be painful and will often require antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to manage pain and allow healing. The other potential is an anal sac mass. Due to Ben's age I would be very concerned for this. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done from home for either of these conditions. It would be recommended to try to find the closest veterinarian to you and have Ben seen. If it is an anal sac mass, these often require surgery and have the potential to be malignant cancers.
