My dog swallowed a huge turkey piece whole. Should I be worried?

Oh dear! Turkey wings can certainly be dangerous for dogs, as the bones can splinter and cause an obstruction or even perforate the intestines. It's not recommended to induce vomiting in this case, since the bones could damage the esophagus coming up, so you will need to monitor him for the next few days for any problems. Signs of an intestinal blockage or perforation would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, not wanting to eat, or not having bowel movements. If you see any of these symptoms, I would recommend taking him to the vet right away since he may need treatment or even emergency surgery to remove the bones.

The biggest problem with a bigger piece of something swallowed is that it could remain stuck in the esophagus which can be dangerous. Typically signs of this are excessive swallowing/gagging, drooling, acting restless, decreased appetite, etc. If it was fully swallowed then it may or may not upset his stomach (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy). If you become concerned that it may not have been fully swallowed or if he is acting off then a visit to your family vet is in order. This can cause pancreatitis in a small dog such as your Puppy. If he starts excessive vomiting and has a stomach ache then bring him in to your veterinarian immediately for treatment. Not really toxic or dangerous, but do expect some gastrointestinal ''side effects'' as vomiting episodes and diarrhoea. If the turkey pieces were not too warm, you should not notice anything else. I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if you notice any diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Hello. Asta should be just fine, although she might throw the bird up. There is a chance of stomach upset if the bird was already dead, so if anytime in the next few days Asta starts vomiting, develops diarrhea, stops eating or just seem to feel unwell, please contact your veterinarian for recommended treatment.
