My dog ate raw turkey. Is it dangerous? What symptoms should I watch?

Oh dear! Turkey wings can certainly be dangerous for dogs, as the bones can splinter and cause an obstruction or even perforate the intestines. It's not recommended to induce vomiting in this case, since the bones could damage the esophagus coming up, so you will need to monitor him for the next few days for any problems. Signs of an intestinal blockage or perforation would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, not wanting to eat, or not having bowel movements. If you see any of these symptoms, I would recommend taking him to the vet right away since he may need treatment or even emergency surgery to remove the bones.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m not panicking about Scar and I don’t think you need to rush to the ER. But here’s a couple things to watch for. My main concerns for Scar are gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) and less likely, an infection like campylobacter. Gastroenteritis is marked by a small number of vomiting episodes followed by a few days of diarrhea. Pretty much as soon as the vomiting is done, Scar should be acting like herself (happy, active). She should be eating normally by 12 hours after the vomiting stops. If/when the diarrhea comes, that should be the only sign- no lethargy, loss of appetite, etc. This all usually takes care of itself in 2-4 days. An infection from the raw meat could be a bit more serious. Vomiting or diarrhea may be more profuse, she may not want to eat for an extended period of time, may have a fever or noticable lethargy. If you’re seeing this, it’s time to head to the vet for fluids and medications to help with the nausea and diarrhea. And of course, some dogs surprise me and have no signs at all. Just turkey breast meat should be able to dissolve in the stomach without much trouble. Very large quantities of any food can be uncomfortable until they are digested. If there are bones in it, it could cause irritation to the gut as it travels. If there was fat in it, it could lead to pancreatitis a few hours up to a few days after ingestion. I would continue to monitor Lita's appetite and for vomiting and/or diarrhea. If anything is still of in a day or two, she should get checked out by a vet.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for dogs to eat dead animals found in the yard or on walks. Thankfully, in most cases the worst that may occur is some stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Continue feeding bland until there is no vomiting for 48 hours and/or the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the vomiting or diarrhea don't stop or if you see other symptoms (lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, etc.), see your veterinarian.

Not really toxic or dangerous, but do expect some gastrointestinal ''side effects'' as vomiting episodes and diarrhoea. If the turkey pieces were not too warm, you should not notice anything else. I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if you notice any diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
