My dog ate a big piece of raw meat and is acting strange. Is he okay?

Hello. There should be no medical problems with the raw meat, although Leia may not be interested in eating for a while. It is also possible that she could throw this up as it is a rather large amount to eat in one sitting. Otherwise, she should be just fine. Just turkey breast meat should be able to dissolve in the stomach without much trouble. Very large quantities of any food can be uncomfortable until they are digested. If there are bones in it, it could cause irritation to the gut as it travels. If there was fat in it, it could lead to pancreatitis a few hours up to a few days after ingestion. I would continue to monitor Lita's appetite and for vomiting and/or diarrhea. If anything is still of in a day or two, she should get checked out by a vet.

Pesci is a big dog so he may be ok. Keep a close eye on him. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his poop, a loss of appetite, or lethargy, then it's causing problems and he will need to see a vet. I'd monitor him for the next three days to be safe. I hope this helps!

Dietary indiscretion, eating things they shouldn't, can cause stomach and intestinal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, and pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is painful. If there was a bone with in the steak then yes, that could be why he is experiencing abdominal pain. When dogs experience pain their behavior can be very odd: run around like something bit them, clingy, doing the downward dog or prayer position, act lethargic, shake, pant. The best thing for D, since he is showing signs of pain, is to have him seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They may wan to take belly X-rays to be sure the bone is breaking down and isn't stuck. Otherwise I would fast him for 12 hours then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or starts vomiting he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish D the very best!

Hi there! There are a couple of risks associated with eating a pound of raw beef. Aside from general GI distress, dogs, like humans, can contract foodborne illnesses, such as E.coli. Pancreatitis is also a consideration, as that much meat could potentially be a lot for the gut to handle, especially if it's not lean. I would keep a close eye on Brooke for signs of stomach upset, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. I also strongly recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning for further advice. If any symptoms develop, you should bring her to the vet right away for treatment. I do not recommend giving her anything over the counter at home without a vet's advice. I do not see any need to worry at this time. If it was stuck in his throat, then he would be continually gagging and coughing. There is also not much of a chance it would be causing problems in the stomach or intestines, because these are digestible. Signs of a blockage are: not eating, not pooping, vomiting, and acting very depressed/painful. If you happen to see these signs, then this would warrant an urgent trip to the vet. Otherwise, he seems to be doing OK, so I wouldn't be concerned. I hope that helps and all is well with Coby.

Raw meat can contain bacteria like E.coli so it can cause GI upset and illness. Also if it contained a bone at all (most sirloin a don't) then there is a risk for an intestinal obstruction. If Rambo has any vomiting, diarrhea, pain, weakness or belly swelling he needs to be seen by a veterinarian. These signs could occur as soon as 6-12 hours after eating the meat up to 4-5 days later. So if he's normal in a week he will likely be ok. Continue to feed him normally unless he starts having any of those changes outlined above.
