My dog might have swallowed a ring. How long until it comes out?

Hello. Much depends on the size & type of battery, & whether it was swallowed whole or chewed first. Some batteries are in a plastic casing, so if it does not lodge, it may pass in 3-4 days. If the battery was punctured, symptoms of vomiting & diarrhea can begin in hours, but some batteries when swallowed whole may sit a month or so before leakage begins. If you think your pet swallowed a battery, have him x-rayed. Not all batteries show up well on a x-ray film, so try to bring a similar battery with you when you see your vet. It's hard to say. Sometimes these things can hang out in the stomach for weeks before they cause an issue. If you haven't been using gloves to THOROUGHLY examine the stools, you may have missed it. I would just continue to watch Draco for signs of abdominal pain or vomiting, which could indicate that the plastic is causing issues.

It should pass in the next 12-36 hours. A bulky meal should help push it through. To be safer you can monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Seek veterinary attention if he develops any of these symptoms.

If Chewy is acting normal so far, I wouldn't be concerned just yet - the hair tie could possibly cause an obstruction, but there's a good chance that it will pass through without causing any problems. Signs of a possible obstruction would include repeated episodes of vomiting, not wanting to eat, and acting lethargic - if he develops any of these symptoms, I would have him seen by a vet right away. But as long as he is acting normal, eating and drinking with no vomiting, I wouldn't worry. In most cases, objects like this will pass through within 2-3 days of being swallowed; you can look for it in his stool so that you'll know once it's safely out :)

You can continue to watch her for any evidence of an obstruction which may be observed with symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, inappetence and/or lethargy. If these are observed, have Rudi evaluated by a veterianrian for further assessment and treatment as these can be signs of an obstruction which may need therapy. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Briggs. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian for x-rays. This will tell you if he ingested the bone or not. If not, then you will not have to worry. If so, this is potentially a serious situation. The bone can splinter can harm the stomach or intestines. A blockage can also result. The veterinarian will guide you as far as treatment recommendations. I hope this information helps!

Since those pieces are small, it is safe to monitor for any GI signs such as vomiting and diarrhea, lethargy or a decreased appetite. There is a good change that can pass through and you will never notice a problem over the next 24-48 hours!
