My Shih Tzu puppy swallowed rawhide and won't eat. What should I do?

It's hard to tell, it depends how big it was and how badly your puppy is affected. generally speaking it should dissolve in the stomach but it can take many days until it does, you will need to take him to the vet in order to get anti vomiting meds and see if it is enough.

Rawhides can get stuck in the stomach and GI tract, and that could be the cause of Duke's vomiting. Given that he has vomited a couple of times today and isn't eating, I would take him into a vet immediately. He should be checked out right away. Best of luck.

Hello, at his point, I would not be too concerned. Most times, the rawhide will continue to be digested. If Jack does not have much of an appetite tomorrow morning, just try feeding him a little later in the day. If, however, he starts vomiting, refuses all food, gulps water & vomits afterwards, or seems painful or bloated, then get him to your vet quickly. I have never liked giving any kind of rawhide to pets. Give him more appropriate items to chew such as Nylabones & Kong toys where you can hide food, & just about anything else that a dog can gnaw on without the possibility of breaking off & swallowing whole pieces. If he chewed them well then there is a good chance he won't get a blockage. Especially if the rawhides were labeled as easily digestible. Try offering him 1 slice of bread and a soft canned food diet for the next couple of days. Offer him plenty of water and take him on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day to encourage GI motility and the passage of the raw hides. Then monitor Chopper for the next 24-72 hrs for any signs of blockage which includes: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, few feces, and abdominal pain. Best case scenario is that he will just have an upset stomach (mild vomiting and/or diarrhea) that will improve with a bland diet (boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese) after a few days time.

The problem with rawhide treats is that they can cause GI obstructions when swallowed whole. There is a chance this could pass without problem, and there is nothing to be worried about, but to be safe, keep an eye on Luna. Signs of an obstruction include vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, lethargy, and a complete absence of passing feces. If you see any of those signs, take her into a vet right away.
