My dog ate rawhides. How can I help him pass them to avoid blockage?

These are not very digestible, so it may be somewhat concerning depending on the size of it. It's a good sign that he was able to swallow it, because these tend to get stuck in the throat when they are too big. The biggest concern is that the rawhide will get stuck in the intestines. These blockages can cause life-threatening complications. However, most dogs are able to pass various sized objects through their intestines without any problem. Signs of a blockage include vomiting, not defecating and a dramatic decrease in activity. If you notice any of these signs, then it would be best to take Kane to the vet for further evaluation. The problem with rawhide treats is that they can cause GI obstructions when swallowed whole. There is a chance this could pass without problem, and there is nothing to be worried about, but to be safe, keep an eye on Luna. It typically takes up to 72 hours for something to pass fully, and I would continue to monitor him for now. Three inches of it isn't a large piece, and hopefully it should pass without issue. It is a good sign that he is eating is normal, along with his energy and poop, so I would continue to watch him for the next 48 hours to be safe.

At this stage feeding bulky food and monitoring is the best way to go. Signs of intestinal blockage are obvious and you will be able to notice them right away. Dogs with a blockage go off their food, vomit and show abdominal pain. They become weak and lethargic. What is also very important, dogs with a blockage are not passing any stools (soemtimes they try to pass but they are not able to). So, for now keep any eye on your dog and if you see any of these signs get in touch with your way right away. He is a large dog, so there is a good chance that he will pass the piece of leather in his stools.

I am sorry to hear about Zeus! Hopefully this piece is small enough it will pass through the GI tract without issue. I would recommend giving him a few teaspoons of canned pumpkin with his food the next few days to increase his fiber intake and hopefully aid in easy pooping! You do want to monitor for signs of obstruction which include vomiting, decreased appetite and energy level, and abdominal pain. Hello, at his point, I would not be too concerned. Most times, the rawhide will continue to be digested. If Jack does not have much of an appetite tomorrow morning, just try feeding him a little later in the day. If, however, he starts vomiting, refuses all food, gulps water & vomits afterwards, or seems painful or bloated, then get him to your vet quickly. I have never liked giving any kind of rawhide to pets. Give him more appropriate items to chew such as Nylabones & Kong toys where you can hide food, & just about anything else that a dog can gnaw on without the possibility of breaking off & swallowing whole pieces. I do not see any need to worry at this time. If it was stuck in his throat, then he would be continually gagging and coughing. There is also not much of a chance it would be causing problems in the stomach or intestines, because these are digestible. Signs of a blockage are: not eating, not pooping, vomiting, and acting very depressed/painful. If you happen to see these signs, then this would warrant an urgent trip to the vet.
