My dog swallowed a no-hide treat. Should I worry if he seems fine?

These are not very digestible, so it may be somewhat concerning depending on the size of it. It's a good sign that he was able to swallow it, because these tend to get stuck in the throat when they are too big. The biggest concern is that the rawhide will get stuck in the intestines. These blockages can cause life-threatening complications. However, most dogs are able to pass various sized objects through their intestines without any problem. Signs of a blockage include vomiting, not defecating and a dramatic decrease in activity. If you notice any of these signs, then it would be best to take Kane to the vet for further evaluation. Hello, at his point, I would not be too concerned. Most times, the rawhide will continue to be digested. If Jack does not have much of an appetite tomorrow morning, just try feeding him a little later in the day. If, however, he starts vomiting, refuses all food, gulps water & vomits afterwards, or seems painful or bloated, then get him to your vet quickly. I have never liked giving any kind of rawhide to pets. Give him more appropriate items to chew such as Nylabones & Kong toys where you can hide food, & just about anything else that a dog can gnaw on without the possibility of breaking off & swallowing whole pieces. The problem with rawhide treats is that they can cause GI obstructions when swallowed whole. There is a chance this could pass without problem, and there is nothing to be worried about, but to be safe, keep an eye on Luna. Signs of an obstruction include vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, lethargy, and a complete absence of passing feces. If you see any of those signs, take her into a vet right away. If the treat were lodged somewhere, I would expect Rocky to be coughing or gagging. Since he is acting normally, I would presume that it is in his stomach. Depending on the product and the size of the treat, most dental treats have been designed to dissolve in the stomach. I would contact the company that made the dental treat to verify this information and see if they recommend seeking medical care. These seem like they would be pretty digestible, so I wouldn't be particularly concerned. If the chew was lodged in the esophagus I expect you would notice coughing, gagging or regurgitation. You should still monitor Marvin for those signs and for any vomiting, decreased appetite or diarrhea.

The biggest problem with a bigger piece of something swallowed is that it could remain stuck in the esophagus which can be dangerous. Typically signs of this are excessive swallowing/gagging, drooling, acting restless, decreased appetite, etc. If it was fully swallowed then it may or may not upset his stomach (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy). If you become concerned that it may not have been fully swallowed or if he is acting off then a visit to your family vet is in order.
