My puppy swallowed a beefhide. What are the signs of a blockage?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Signs of a blockage are usually not eating, lethargy and vomiting. Rarely (less than 10%) just diarrhea. It is most likely an upset stomach. I would avoid giving beef raw hides. If the diarrhea is bad then fast him for 12-24 hours then offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish you the best!

I do not see any need to worry at this time. If it was stuck in his throat, then he would be continually gagging and coughing. There is also not much of a chance it would be causing problems in the stomach or intestines, because these are digestible. Signs of a blockage are: not eating, not pooping, vomiting, and acting very depressed/painful. If you happen to see these signs, then this would warrant an urgent trip to the vet. Otherwise, he seems to be doing OK, so I wouldn't be concerned. I hope that helps and all is well with Coby.

The problem with rawhide treats is that they can cause GI obstructions when swallowed whole. There is a chance this could pass without problem, and there is nothing to be worried about, but to be safe, keep an eye on Luna. Signs of an obstruction include vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, lethargy, and a complete absence of passing feces. If you see any of those signs, take her into a vet right away. It can take up to 72 hours for these things to pass, so watch her for the next three days. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

If he chewed them well then there is a good chance he won't get a blockage. Especially if the rawhides were labeled as easily digestible. Try offering him 1 slice of bread and a soft canned food diet for the next couple of days. Offer him plenty of water and take him on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day to encourage GI motility and the passage of the raw hides. Then monitor Chopper for the next 24-72 hrs for any signs of blockage which includes: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, few feces, and abdominal pain. Best case scenario is that he will just have an upset stomach (mild vomiting and/or diarrhea) that will improve with a bland diet (boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese) after a few days time.

At this stage feeding bulky food and monitoring is the best way to go. Signs of intestinal blockage are obvious and you will be able to notice them right away. Dogs with a blockage go off their food, vomit and show abdominal pain. They become weak and lethargic. What is also very important, dogs with a blockage are not passing any stools (soemtimes they try to pass but they are not able to). So, for now keep any eye on your dog and if you see any of these signs get in touch with your way right away. He is a large dog, so there is a good chance that he will pass the piece of leather in his stools.

Hello, at his point, I would not be too concerned. Most times, the rawhide will continue to be digested. If Jack does not have much of an appetite tomorrow morning, just try feeding him a little later in the day. If, however, he starts vomiting, refuses all food, gulps water & vomits afterwards, or seems painful or bloated, then get him to your vet quickly. I have never liked giving any kind of rawhide to pets. Give him more appropriate items to chew such as Nylabones & Kong toys where you can hide food, & just about anything else that a dog can gnaw on without the possibility of breaking off & swallowing whole pieces. Well that was naughty of Teddy to eat the rug. If he has since eaten well with no vomiting and continues to not vomit, have a normal appetite and use the bathroom fine, he should be ok. Signs of an obstruction are continuous vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, scant (small) feces and lethargy (decreased energy level). I hope that Teddy is able to pass the rug pieces well. If he chewed it well then chances of him passing it are really good. He may have an upset stomach though, at which time you can try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to see if it settles things down.
