My dog swallowed a hard treat. Is it dangerous? When to see a vet?

If the treat were lodged somewhere, I would expect Rocky to be coughing or gagging. Since he is acting normally, I would presume that it is in his stomach. Depending on the product and the size of the treat, most dental treats have been designed to dissolve in the stomach. I would contact the company that made the dental treat to verify this information and see if they recommend seeking medical care. I do not see any need to worry at this time. If it was stuck in his throat, then he would be continually gagging and coughing. There is also not much of a chance it would be causing problems in the stomach or intestines, because these are digestible. Signs of a blockage are: not eating, not pooping, vomiting, and acting very depressed/painful. If you happen to see these signs, then this would warrant an urgent trip to the vet. Otherwise, he seems to be doing OK, so I wouldn't be concerned. I hope that helps and all is well with Coby.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh no! I would check his stools to see if they pass. If he can't pass them then the signs would be vomiting, not eating, lethargy. You can also have an X-ray taken to see if they are inside him! I hope this helps!

She is a larger dog, so she will likely be OK. I would monitor her closely for any gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. Acute intake of fatty foods can cause acute pancreatitis in dogs, which can range from an easy fix to a multi-day hospitalization with potential for life-threatening complications. If Xena becomes inappetant, has episodes of vomiting or diarrhea, or simply isn't acting herself, I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. It is unlikely that the high-calcium buffalo treats will cause any issues. I hope this is helpful!

It should dissolve in his stomach but you should monitor for vomiting and diarrhea. If you notice anything abnormal then he should be examined by a vet for treatment. You could buy a Kong toy for him and stuff it with treats. He won't be able to swollow the Kong.

You can monitor her closely for signs consistent with a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, nausea, inappetence and abdominal pain. If any of these signs are observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as those may be indications of an obstruction.
