Why is my dog suddenly peeing indoors at night? Could it be a UTI?

Pet's info: Dog | Dalmatian | Male | neutered | 4 years and 11 months old | 70 lbs

Hi Pongo has urinated overnight indoors 3 times in the last month he has no obvious health concerns or other symptoms. Good appetite happy to exercise no vommitting or loose stools. This is not usual behaviour, could it be a water infection?

Inappropriate urination can be due to many different factors including:
- urinary tract infections
- urinary bladder inflammation (cystitis) which can be due to stress
- urinary stones
- diabetes
- cushing's disease
- hypothyroidism
- pyometra (not related to Pongo because this only occurs in females)
- behavioural

I recommend having Pongo seen by your vet, and they will likely check a urine sample to look for stones.

Dalmations are very prone to a certain type of stone, so this is the most likely cause. Pongo might be at risk of a urethral blockage (can be fatal) if stones are present and get stuck in the urethra, so getting this diagnosed early is important.

I recommend a visit to the vet when they are open for a urine check, and possible x-rays or ultrasound. Not all stones show up on x-rays.

I’m sorry to hear about Bruno! I am concerned that he might have developed a urinary tract infection. There is one medication (prednisone/prednisolone) they can caused increased urination and drinking but those should stop as soon as the medication was stopped. The UTI may be even more likely if he’s recently hurt his back or neck because they tend not to posture/squat all the way or for long enough when it hurts. So they hold their urine longer than they might otherwise do or don’t empty their bladder fully. These can predispose to UTI. Take Bruno (and a urine sample if you can catch one) in to the vet to do a urine test and get on antibiotics if that’s what it turns out to be. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The urinary tract symptoms you describe could be due to a urinary tract infection, urinary stones, a tumor, among other possibilities. Keep in mind that this may be unrelated to the crystals and can even be something like urinary incontinence. I would continue monitoring for signs of painful urination or bloody urine. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work. Why is my pug peeing constantly after drinking and walking around?

For that reason, I would encourage you to go to your veterinarian as this could be something treatable and very manageable. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out a urinary tract infection or other lower urinary disease like bladder stones. Even though you’re not seeing blood these wouodnbe common causes of sudden inappropriate urination and its important to rule out a medical condition first. If Pog’s urine and other testing is normal you can discuss restarting house training with your vet.

My 5-month-old puppy suddenly wakes up at night to go potty.

My trained dog suddenly started peeing in the house at night.

I would make sure that Simba does not have a medical issue like a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or cystitis. I recommend taking him to your vet for a urine test. If the urine sample is normal than it is likely he has a behavioral issue. I would recommend picking up the water before bedtime to help prevent urination overnight. Also you could start to crate train him too.

Why is my house-trained dog suddenly peeing inside the house?

Poor Riley (and you!)! Riley could be urinating in the house because of a medical issue, such as a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Behavioral stressors, such as a change in her normal routine, can trigger inappropriate urination in some pets. As a first step, Riley should be seen by her vet and have a urinalysis performed to check for the presence of infection and crystals. A urinary tract infection requires antibiotics and crystals may require a diet change. If medical issues are ruled out, consider using a calming pheromone diffuser or collar (Adaptil is one example).
