Why is my 7-month Golden Retriever suddenly drooling so much?

Hi there and thank you for your post! It sounds like Riley may have gotten into something outside. Hypersalivation can be from many possible causes. With his age, I would suspect something irritating (chemical, toad, insect sting) or something stuck in his oral cavity. Have you looked inside his mouth to ensure there isn't a stick or something stuck? If not, I would rinse out his mouth with the hose on low pressure and see if that helps. If there is any swelling, I would give a dose of Benadryl and take him to your veterinarian right away in case this is a severe allergic reaction. Hypersalivation can be caused by issues swallowing, nausea, or dental disease. Sometimes, twigs or sharp objects can get logded between the teeth or in the palate, so you can take a look in Kola's mouth if he will allow it safely. Unfortunately, their is no "quick fix" as the cause is not known. If you believe that Kola is having trouble swallowing (dribbling water, unable to swallow food) he should be seen immediately, as he may aspirate and can develop pneumonia. Otherwise, you should monitor him closely and have him seen as soon as possible.

If Hoyt does have two teeth cutting through at the moment, then the drooling certainly can be caused by that. Without seeing him person, however, I can't say that for certain. Given that he isn't acting any differently, I would monitor him for tonight, and if the excessive drooling continues through until tomorrow, then I would have him seen by a vet for a health check. Should he start act differently and shows other signs such a vomiting and lethargy, then I would take him into a vet ASAP.

Try to determine if Vanilla has eaten anything in the house or yard, including plants, medications, trash or table scraps, as this could indicate a possible toxin exposure. First, and most importantly, I always ask if a drooling dog has had a rabies vaccine and if they may have come in contact with a wild animal or another dog or cat with unknown vaccine history. If any of the above is the case, even though the chances are low, I would still take precautions and make sure to avoid contact with the saliva or bodily fluids until Oliver sees his veterinarian. If he has had his rabies vaccine, or there is little to no chance that he could have come in contact with another infected animal, then I would be a little less cautious, but still take him in to see his veterinarian. He could be nauseous, which is a very common cause of nausea. This could be because he ate something he shouldn't have and it is bothering his stomach, or he had a recent change in diet, or a new treat introduced. Sometimes rawhide type chews can break off into pieces and get stuck in the stomach causing intermittent nausea. Puppies can also sometimes eat things like pieces of toy, blanket, or even rocks! Another reason a puppy or dog may drool is due to something going on with the teeth - fracture or infection, for example. A piece of foreign material, like a foxtail awn, if they are common in your area, can cause excessively drooling if they become lodged in the oral cavity as well. The above are some reasons for drooling, but there are many more. To be safe, since Oliver is so young, I would make an appointment with his veterinarian to have him checked. They can make sure he doesn't need any tests to be run, like Xrays or blood work, and they can also send home some medications to make him feel better, should it be something like an upset tummy. Are his gums red, swollen, or bleeding? If so, try a professional cleaning and then daily brushing. Your vet can check for gingivitis, mouth ulcers, and tumors as well. Organ disease: Liver and kidney diseases, for example, can cause drooling. As they age, dogs are more likely to get sick. Vets suggest annual checkups to diagnose and treat diseases early. Poisonous plants: Common plants like tulips, azaleas, and chrysanthemums can not only make your dog drool, but also make him sick. Keep your dog from eating them. For a list of poisonous plants, consult the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Stomachaches: Dogs don’t tend to think before eating. Vets report pulling some strange items from their stomachs, from tennis balls to socket wrenches. This can cause nausea, discomfort and pain. Keep dangerous items away from him. Upper respiratory infections: Drooling can signal an infection of the nose, throat, or sinuses. Dogs that live in homes or shelters with other pets have a higher risk. Stress is also a factor.
