Why is my 5-month-old puppy drooling? Is it teething or vet visit?

I do find that dogs tend to drool a little more when they are losing their deciduous (baby) teeth. If he is losing molars he should have nearly all of his permanent teeth in, so if the drooling continues for more than a couple of weeks, if Pixel seems uncomfortable when eating, or if you notice any blood or foul smell in the drool I'd recommend seeing a vet.

Hello, this could be associated with ingestion of any caustic chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide. Teething can also cause this although by 7month old he should have he adult teeth, however each dog may differ in timing. Having something stuck in his mouth can also cause this. The salivation could also be a sign that he is feeling nausea and may want to vomit. Try to determine if Vanilla has eaten anything in the house or yard, including plants, medications, trash or table scraps, as this could indicate a possible toxin exposure. Otherwise, at 4 months old, Vanilla as at the height of teething behavior. Babies and toddlers commonly drool as they cut new teeth, but this behavior would be highly unusual for puppies. Consider taking Vanilla to her vet to determine if she has significant oral pain, abdominal pain consistent with nausea, or other abnormalities on physical exam.

If he has had his rabies vaccine, or there is little to no chance that he could have come in contact with another infected animal, then I would be a little less cautious, but still take him in to see his veterinarian. This could be because he ate something he shouldn't have and it is bothering his stomach, or he had a recent change in diet, or a new treat introduced. Sometimes rawhide type chews can break off into pieces and get stuck in the stomach causing intermittent nausea. Puppies can also sometimes eat things like pieces of toy, blanket, or even rocks! Another reason a puppy or dog may drool is due to something going on with the teeth - fracture or infection, for example. A piece of foreign material, like a foxtail awn, if they are common in your area, can cause excessively drooling if they become lodged in the oral cavity as well. The above are some reasons for drooling, but there are many more. To be safe, since Oliver is so young, I would make an appointment with his veterinarian to have him checked. They can make sure he doesn't need any tests to be run, like Xrays or blood work, and they can also send home some medications to make him feel better, should it be something like an upset tummy.
