Why does my dog drool a ton only when we're at the dog park?

Drooling can be a sign of stress or just hyperexcitement, so it could be that the anticipation of going to the park is getting Bamboo very excited (even if it's good excitement rather than fearful.) Taking some time to maybe go to the park, but not go inside it, and offer treats if Bamboo is sitting calmly may help reduce some of the hyper excitement of going to the park. Changing up your routine of going there may also help decrease the behavior. If he does seem very stressed out by going to the park or isn't enjoying it, there are plenty of other activities you can do together to get out energy without causing stress. Some dogs are just not very into dog parks, and finding other more enjoyable activities are just as good.

Too much drool, or hypersalivation, can be a sign of illness. Here are some causes: Heat stroke and heat exhaustion, nausea and anxiety can cause episodes of drooling. Mouth disease and tooth decay: Tarter buildup can rub against the inside of your dog’s lip, causing drool. To check, pull his lip back toward his ear. Do his teeth look like concrete? Are they brown? Are his gums red, swollen, or bleeding? If so, try a professional cleaning and then daily brushing. Your vet can check for gingivitis, mouth ulcers, and tumors as well. Organ disease: Liver and kidney diseases, for example, can cause drooling. As they age, dogs are more likely to get sick. Vets suggest annual checkups to diagnose and treat diseases early. Poisonous plants: Common plants like tulips, azaleas, and chrysanthemums can not only make your dog drool, but also make him sick. Keep your dog from eating them. For a list of poisonous plants, consult the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Stomachaches: Dogs don’t tend to think before eating. Vets report pulling some strange items from their stomachs, from tennis balls to socket wrenches. This can cause nausea, discomfort and pain. Keep dangerous items away from him. Upper respiratory infections: Drooling can signal an infection of the nose, throat, or sinuses. Dogs that live in homes or shelters with other pets have a higher risk. Stress is also a factor. Only your vet can properly treat an infection. But you can take steps to protect your dog: Keep him indoors, away from other pets, and wash your hands between handling different animals. You’re the best judge of your dog’s behavior. If he’s acting strange for more than a day, he seems stressed, or he is not eating and playing as usual, it’s wise to see a vet.

Drooling is often a sign of stress in dogs or can even be a sign of overstimulation/hyperexcitement and it may be that the doggie daycare is stressing him out an awful lot. Seeing if he can be in a "quiet" or "shy dog" area and if that improves his drooling may help, otherwise, seeing if there are alternatives to the doggy daycare that may be more comfortable for him may be best. If the drooling continues even with the changes, or you see any other signs of illness, seeking out a veterinary exam is best to make sure there isn't an underlying health cause to the issue.

This could be from his being nausea after eating what he wasn't suppose to. He could have eating something else that you didn't see him eat. Is there any way he could have gotten a hold of a frog/lizard even for a brief moment? These can cause excessive drooling. There are other toxins that can cause that as well. I would have your vet take a look at him as soon as possible just in case this was some type of weird toxin. If a toxin goes left untreated, it could progress and get worse and be much harder to treat. I hope this helps and hopefully it is just him being nauseous.

Hypersalivation can be caused by issues swallowing, nausea, or dental disease. Sometimes, twigs or sharp objects can get logded between the teeth or in the palate, so you can take a look in Kola's mouth if he will allow it safely. Unfortunately, their is no "quick fix" as the cause is not known. If you believe that Kola is having trouble swallowing (dribbling water, unable to swallow food) he should be seen immediately, as he may aspirate and can develop pneumonia. Otherwise, you should monitor him closely and have him seen as soon as possible.

Although the area in your picture does look red and potentially inflamed I don't think it looks infected. It would be best for your vet to make that call in person - I'd recommend making an appointment to have them examine the area in person and until then you should prevent Rocco from licking the area. I doubt the drooling is related. Drooling can be related to a tooth problem (possibly something you can't see), nausea, pain or ingesting something that tastes bad. If the drooling continues you should bring this up to your vet as well.

He may have ingested something he was not supposed to such as lizard or frog or sticks or getting into garbage. If they pant or drool excessively with their mouth open, they can ingest a lot of air to gas bloating. Drooling can also be a sign of nausea or pain. IF there is abdominal cramping from all the gas it can cause more drooling and nausea. The best thing to do is have them to continue to monitor him to make sure his pain in controlled and monitor for vomiting and make sure the gas dissolves and continues to be passed and does not cause pancreatitis or an ileus.
