Why is my 4-month-old puppy drooling excessively? What should I do?

Hi there I'm so sorry to hear about Oliver's troubles. First, and most importantly, I always ask if a drooling dog has had a rabies vaccine and if they may have come in contact with a wild animal or another dog or cat with unknown vaccine history. If any of the above is the case, even though the chances are low, I would still take precautions and make sure to avoid contact with the saliva or bodily fluids until Oliver sees his veterinarian. If he has had his rabies vaccine, or there is little to no chance that he could have come in contact with another infected animal, then I would be a little less cautious, but still take him in to see his veterinarian. He could be nauseous, which is a very common cause of nausea. This could be because he ate something he shouldn't have and it is bothering his stomach, or he had a recent change in diet, or a new treat introduced. Sometimes rawhide type chews can break off into pieces and get stuck in the stomach causing intermittent nausea. Puppies can also sometimes eat things like pieces of toy, blanket, or even rocks! Another reason a puppy or dog may drool is due to something going on with the teeth - fracture or infection, for example. A piece of foreign material, like a foxtail awn, if they are common in your area, can cause excessively drooling if they become lodged in the oral cavity as well. The above are some reasons for drooling, but there are many more. To be safe, since Oliver is so young, I would make an appointment with his veterinarian to have him checked. They can make sure he doesn't need any tests to be run, like Xrays or blood work, and they can also send home some medications to make him feel better, should it be something like an upset tummy. Hello, this could be associated with ingestion of any caustic chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide. Teething can also cause this although by 7month old he should have he adult teeth, however each dog may differ in timing. Having something stuck in his mouth can also cause this. The salivation could also be a sign that he is feeling nausea and may want to vomit. Monitor him for persistent hyper salivation, vomiting, a decreased appetite or lethargy and have him evaluated by a veterinarian if he develops any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I do find that dogs tend to drool a little more when they are losing their deciduous (baby) teeth. If he is losing molars he should have nearly all of his permanent teeth in, so if the drooling continues for more than a couple of weeks, if Pixel seems uncomfortable when eating, or if you notice any blood or foul smell in the drool I'd recommend seeing a vet.

If Hoyt does have two teeth cutting through at the moment, then the drooling certainly can be caused by that. Without seeing him person, however, I can't say that for certain. Given that he isn't acting any differently, I would monitor him for tonight, and if the excessive drooling continues through until tomorrow, then I would have him seen by a vet for a health check. Should he start act differently and shows other signs such a vomiting and lethargy, then I would take him into a vet ASAP.

Drooling is a sign of nausea which could be caused by something she ate. She may correct herself, so I would suggest perhaps monitoring her for the next 6 hrs to see if this behavior stops. If she continues to drool and/or other symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite) develop then that is definitely a good time to get her checked by your local veterinarian. Other possible causes of drooling are: problems with her teeth, infection, and nausea due to organ malfunction (i.e. kidneys, liver, etc). You can also offer her a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for the next few feedings to see if this too will help settle her stomach. Hello, I'd recommend taking Jaxon to the veterinarian. Excessive drooling could be a sign of nausea and pain. They will want to x-ray his abdomen and see if the plastic he ate is lodged in his intestines, possibly requiring surgical removal. This would be the most common reason for a vaccinated puppy to be this nauseous. I hope this is helpful.
