My dog died suddenly. Could it be poisoning or a ruptured tumor?

Oh my, that is so horrible for you, I am so sorry for your loss! It could be that she got into something toxic causing her symptoms or she could have had an abdominal tumor that suddenly ruptured. Without seeing her in person, I unfortunately can't say for certain. If you would like an answer, you can take her into a vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs). This may give you some answers as to why she suddenly passed away. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Basset Hounds are amazing dogs (I have one myself), and I'm sure Mia will be greatly missed :-(

Unfortunately, the only way to know why she died would be to have an autopsy performed (called a necropsy in animals), either by your veterinarian or a veterinary pathologist if you have one nearby. Since it sounds like it happened quite suddenly and she was bleeding from her eyes, she may have had a bleeding disorder (this can be caused by ingesting rat poison, or by some hereditary or immune-mediated diseases), or she could have suffered a head trauma of some kind. But I'm afraid there's no way to know for sure without a necrospy. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. The signs you are describing could be compatible with a rodenticide anti-coagulant intoxication. Bleeding usually starts in the thoracic vessels and when started is often quite late to reverse. It is usually not a painful intoxication and very often quite subtle in terms of clinical signs.

This is very suspicious. This sounds like the dogs ingested something poisonous, possibly anti-freeze or other chemicals. I would inform the local police about possible poisoning of all these dogs. Should your neighbor's dog die, it will be advisable to have a post mortem done to verify the cause of death.

Allow me to first say that I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dixie bear was taken way too early and I offer you my deepest sympathies. Unfortunately, sudden and acute deaths can happen to dogs and cats just like in human beings. Dogs that are completely normal one moment can suddenly have heart attacks or brain aneurysms, etc. that can cause them to pass away the next. Usually the three main causes of sudden death in dogs of her age are massive heart attacks, brain or cardiac aneurysms, or toxicity of some kind. And yes, all three of these diseases can cause an animal to exhibit vomiting right before they pass away. Sadly, the only true way to find out what an animal has died from it is by having a post death autopsy performed by a specialized pathologist. if this is something you’re interested in doing, please contact your veterinarian as to whether or not they can refer you to someone that could help determine the cause of death. Again, I'm sorry you lost Honey suddenly. One thing that comes to mind to me is a splenic hemangiosarcoma (tumor on the spleen). The dog acts completely normal while this tumor is growing (or shows only very subtle signs of illness), and then suddenly crashes and dies when the tumor ruptures (which they do). It appears to come out of nowhere. This happened to my dog. He seemed completely fine, then one night out of nowhere, he was panting and having trouble breathing. I rushed him into the clinic, and he had a stomach full of fluid. There was nothing I could at that point in time. Another option is she got into something toxic. I wish I could give an exact answer, but without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain, but I hope this helps.

I'm so sorry to hear about Shadow. How terrible! There are a number of things that can potentially cause such a sudden death, but sudden heart failure would be towards the top of the list, as dobermans are prone to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, which can suddenly progress with no obvious prior symptoms. Other possibilities would include a ruptured mass/tumor, or a toxin. If it would be helpful to have more information about the cause of death, most vets are willing to perform a necropsy (animal version of an autopsy) for a reasonable price.
