My Doberman collapsed and died. Was it heart attack or poison?

First off, I'm extremely sorry Belle died suddenly! Please accept my condolences for your loss. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what caused her to die, but it could be she was suffering from heart disease. That would cause a cough, and can lead to sudden death. If you want a definitive answer, you could take her into a vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs). Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

It could be he got into something toxic, he could have had heart disease, or it could be he had cancer causing him to pass away. I'm only guessing here, but if he wasn't vaccinated, it could have been parvo that caused him to pass. It could also be that he had a foreign body, a severe GI illness, or if he was fed a raw diet, the bacteria from the raw diet could have made him extremely sick. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

Hello. I am so sorry for your loss. I am so sad for you. Without a complete medical history, it is impossible to determine causation, but sudden death can be brought on by heart failure, drug or toxin ingestion, electrocution, a ruptured spleen, blood vessel or undiagnosed tumor, severe anaphylaxis, or some other congenital problem just waiting to happen. A sudden death is always shocking & I can understand your need for answers, but sometimes things just happen & they are totally out of our control. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. It's possible that he may have had a stroke or blood clot secondary to his heart disease that traveled to his brain. Or, if he was regularly having collapsing episodes due to his heart (syncope), what you saw may have been one of these that was especially severe, as this is a common cause of sudden death in dogs with severe heart problems. If you want to try to get a more definite answer on what the cause of death may have been, you would need to have an autopsy done, called a necropsy in animals. Your veterinarian should be able to let you know where you can have this done, if it's something you want to pursue. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear about Sky. I can only imagine what you are dealing with at this moment. Based on what you described, I would be suspicious of rat bait poisoning. Rat bait works quickly (effects can start within a few hours) and bleeding is the main consequence. The only other thing that would possibly look like this would be a ruptured abdominal tumor (cancer). This is generally a condition that effects older dogs. Its not uncommon that the pet will act completely normal until the tumor actually ruptures. Mortality is very high. Once again, I'm sorry for your loss. Allow me to first say that I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dixie bear was taken way too early and I offer you my deepest sympathies. Unfortunately, sudden and acute deaths can happen to dogs and cats just like in human beings. Dogs that are completely normal one moment can suddenly have heart attacks or brain aneurysms, etc. that can cause them to pass away the next. Usually the three main causes of sudden death in dogs of her age are massive heart attacks, brain or cardiac aneurysms, or toxicity of some kind. And yes, all three of these diseases can cause an animal to exhibit vomiting right before they pass away. Sadly, the only true way to find out what an animal has died from it is by having a post death autopsy performed by a specialized pathologist. if this is something you’re interested in doing, please contact your veterinarian as to whether or not they can refer you to someone that could help determine the cause of death.
