My dog has sudden bumps all over. Is it hives? Should I go to ER vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 18 lbs

Hi , I have a 3 year old Boston terrier and all of a sudden an hour ago, these little bumps started showing up all over her body. In the pictures attached you will see wherever there are hairs sticking out there’s a bump. What should I do ? Should I go to an emergency vet?

I see what you mean about the bumps on Lola! It looks like she could have hives, and that can be caused by an allergic reaction. I do recommend a visit to the ER vet now, as allergic reactions can quickly progress and cause serious problems such as respiratory distress. It's best she is treated now to prevent this from happening, so yes, please take her to an ER vet. Best of luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could be benign or malignant growths. While they can be hives, it is a bit unusual that they are so focal as hives tend to be more generalized and diffuse. There are certain growths that can come and go like Marley's. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. If these just arose out of nowhere I would be concerned they are hives and she is having an allergic reaction. Since they are on her face, I would consider this an emergency, so it would be recommended to take her in to the emergency clinic right away, where they can give her a shot of benadryl and a steroid shot to stop the reaction. In severe cases of allergic reactions the face can continue to swell and the swelling can extend to the airway, becoming life threatening, and we don't want that to happen!

The problem with an allergic reaction is that it can quickly progress to swelling of the face and snout, leading to respiratory distress. Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh dear, this sounds like Bella has hives indicating an allergic reactions to something she was exposed to. Please take her into a veterinarian right away for treatment. She will need antihistamines and a steroid. Whatever she was exposed to needs to be identified so she does not have a reaction like this again. Best of luck!

My dog has swollen bumps and a swollen eye. Should I see a vet now?

It could be that Lovey is suffering from an allergic reaction causing these swollen bumps around his body. It could be an environmental allergy causing these bumps, but without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. I am concerned he now has a swollen eye, as he could have injured his eye or have an eye infection. To answer your question, yes definitely take him into the vet today. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Yes, it does sound like Cozi may be suffering from an allergic reaction. More than likely, it's a contact allergy from something in the environment. My dog has large, growing bumps on his rump. Is it an emergency?

These lumps are not typical of a flea allergy dermatitis. That typically is just a superficial rash with itching, hair loss, scabs, etc. These lumps are concerning. Your pet may have developed abscesses which are deeper infections that form pockets of pus or infectious fluid. This is worth a trip to the vet for a recheck. I do not feel that it is a life threatening emergency, but it should be addressed by your veterinarian as soon as regular business hours resume. Your pet may need prescription antibiotics, the lumps may need to be aspirated or checked with a needle and if they are full of pus, they should be drained. Please have your vet recheck him as soon as possible,
