My dog has sudden bumps on her head. Is it hives or emergency?

My dog has a lot of bumps on her head. They almost look like mosquito bites and they're getting bigger and she's getting more. It started about 10 minutes ago. I don't know what it is or what to do.

If these just arose out of nowhere I would be concerned they are hives and she is having an allergic reaction. Since they are on her face, I would consider this an emergency, so it would be recommended to take her in to the emergency clinic right away, where they can give her a shot of benadryl and a steroid shot to stop the reaction. In severe cases of allergic reactions the face can continue to swell and the swelling can extend to the airway, becoming life threatening, and we don't want that to happen!

    Oh no, poor Finley! If she was just outside, it could be that she is suffering from an allergic reaction or bug bites. I would monitor her for now. Should these bumps spread or she starts showing other signs of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing and/or swelling of her face and muzzle, then I would have her seen by an ER vet. The Animal Emergency Clinic of St. Petersburg (727-323-1311) is open 24 hours, so you can take Finley into there if needed. Otherwise, monitor her tonight, and if the bumps are still present in the morning, I would take her into your vet for treatment. I hope this helps!

I see what you mean about the bumps on Lola! It looks like she could have hives, and that can be caused by an allergic reaction. I do recommend a visit to the ER vet now, as allergic reactions can quickly progress and cause serious problems such as respiratory distress. Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh dear, this sounds like Bella has hives indicating an allergic reactions to something she was exposed to. Please take her into a veterinarian right away for treatment. She will need antihistamines and a steroid. Whatever she was exposed to needs to be identified so she does not have a reaction like this again. Best of luck!

If these bumps appears on Bella recently in the last few hours, then these could be hives, insect sting or bite, or a mild skin irritation. It is hard to say for sure without seeing Bella in person. If they are very itchy and persist or seem to really bother her, I would seek care for Bella with her veterinarian soon to have these evaluated.

They look like hives. She likely was bite by a bug and is experiencing an allergic reaction. Hi, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From your pictures it appears that Kona may have hives. Monitor her closely for any other signs of illness. If she vomits any more, the bumps spread or get bigger, or she has any other itching she should go to an emergency clinic. Any coughing or swelling of her face and she needs to be treated immediately. She may have gotten stung or bitten by an insect or having a reaction to a plant in the grass. In some cases, giving a dose benedryl can help. I hope Kona is feeling better soon.

This is probably an allergic reaction due to an insect bite or a plant outside. those reactions tend to resolve within 48 hours without treatment. if the swelling becomes too large or if your dog is lethargic, take her to the vet in order to get an antihistamine injection.
